Gender Aspects Of Gender Representation In The Media

This review primarily assesses areas of literature regarding topics of gender representations in the media and research approaches that have been taken around the subject area. Numerous literature findings formed around these topics have covered television drama as well as other media formats but not many studies have concerned a collection of a TV series in reference to the same writer to analysis comparison and contrast of representation.

With the research surrounding gender identity, many are constructed through representation of discourse. Constructions of gender more importantly, femininity is a plays a large dominance ideology that suggests ‘proper’ behavior for women (Goffman, 1976; Macdonald, 1995). Due to the gradual revolution of women’s roles and positioning in society since the nineteenth century, scholars have developed more powerful movements redefining was it is to be a woman. (Hooks, 1990; Friedan, 1963).

There is a heavy amount of arguments surrounding the topic of how females are as well as should be represented in the media. Relevant literature in this study concerns what arguments have been raised regarding the characteristics of a black woman in the 21st century is represented in the media. Feminism and feminist media studies have tendered to create white women as the privileged gender as a woman above the other feminist categories – race in particular (Hooks, 1990; Dines, 1995 and Humez, 2003, settles, Pratt-Hyatt).

...a Yang. With the traditional portrayal of women being considered as sexualized and secondary in mainstream media, the methodological approach of a textual analysis was able to determine whether female characters with more hierarchy roles changed the characteristics of the two women.

Deliberation of these past studies, demonstrates relevance to the current study being undertaken. This area of research does not necessarily have a significant gap, but the current study contributes to contemporary media representations and analysis and would be of interest to analyse the representation black woman played as a protagonist and general character. Greys Anatomy has been studied individually but the recent programme of scandal has not been looked at theoretically. The aim is to find out the characteristics of the black female amongst the other characters in the TV drama.
