Background Information
The Toronto Transportation Commission was established in 1920, however, it was only renamed the Toronto Transit Commission on January 1 of 1954. Toronto’s first subway, which also started in 1954; the Union-to-Eglinton section of what is now the Yonge line, was built with revenues from the war when gas limits restricted the use of automobiles. As well, in that year, the TTC became the only provider of public transit in Metro Toronto. However, the Toronto Transit Commission has come a long way, as the total number of riders in 2008 was 466.7 million. Also, in 2009, 2,487,000 fares (including transfers) were collected on an average business day.

The people most involved in this issue are Mayor David Miller, Premier Dalton McGuinty, and Metrolinx, the transportation company who will soon be building the 5 new Transit City lines. This is a very important issue for Mayor David Miller, and the delayed funding for Toronto transit goes against the mayor’s ambitious public transportation legacy. This issue became a concern when Premier Dalton McGuinty withdrew the transit funding after having announced it previously. Consequently, the expansions and the Light Rail Transit will not be ready for the Pan-American Games in 2015 as they were said to be.
Why This Is an Issue
Transit is a very important part of Toronto as a city as many people take public transit to get to work, school, social events or other places. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is not the best method of transportation in the city of Toronto, because it’s unreliable, inconvenient, and unsanitary. First of all, the TTC is unreliable because of many delays. The TTC buses often come late and there are many subway breakdowns and signal problems. These problems can cause longer wait times and result in the rider being late. Additionally, the TTC is inconvenient because it is difficult for the rider to get to his or her destination without a few transfers. The Trans-Canada highway act was passed down by the parliament in 1949 , which is the year after St-Laurent was elected as the prime minister of Canada. The act offered the provinces a 50-50 split on the cost of building a highway from coast to coast to reduce the federal money and decreased the needs of taxes. Moreover, as one can see from its name, this act's purpose is to approve the establishment of the Trans-Canada Highway. As a matter of fact, Trans-Canada highway is extremely advantageous for Canada and is the world's longest national highway as it stretches from Victoria, British Columbia to St. John's, Newfoundland, connecting all 10 provinces together. Canada became an emerging country after the Second World War. There was a need for Canada to identify themselves as a distinct nation from Britain and the United States. The Trans Canada Highway became a visible nationalistic figure that set apart Canada from other countries. The Trans Canada Highway was a significant structure built in 1949 through 1961 that emerged as a result of a newfound unity and nationalistic view in Canada. Although there were many different political, personal and economical standpoints on the building of the highway, the finalization of the construction of the highway brought a unique unity that could be appreciated by all Canadians.
When you encounter a city such as Chicago, it is practically impossible to avoid CTA and Metra trains. From short store errands to long journeys home, the CTA is there as your personal downtown car. If you do not have enough money to put into owning a car or simply do not want to put up with trying to find parking in the congested city, the CTA is there for you. Where more people to use the CTA, the amount of gas polluting the earth would significantly decrease the pollution levels in Chicago. Since there aren't as many cars on the road, it not only decreases the carbon monoxide leaking from cars but the amount of cars on the road, which also decreases the amount of people on the road. Numerous laws state how using the CTA could benefit people in Chicago overall. These are just some of the reasons Metra and the CTA has impacted everything from population to economics and even political and environmental issues.

Whereas the “Tube” joy ride can be experience for only $2.25; in contrast to taxi cabs, where they will charge you somewhere between $10-$15.00 for a perilous ½ mile trip. On a personal note, I feel that subways are far from a rip-off. I mean how else one can get from Inwood Country Club to Rockaway Beach for less than the cost of a Starbucks latte the subways are far from a rip-off. Believe it or not, 30 years ago, the subway fare used to be just a $1. This fare is even lower than the average fare that we pay today for a 30 day unlimited metro card. If one does the math, that’s $1.96 in 2009 dollars. Today the 30 day unlimited metro card brings fare down to $1.25. Altogether, I consider the subways to be a profitable deal. I mean how else one can get from Inwood Country Club to Rockaway Beach for less than the cost of a Starbucks latte?
For now the more use are the airlines, buses, or trains. Many people use the airlines to travel to one place to another, and by building the railway it will decrease the number of people who ride the planes and it will decrease the amount of people traveling in car, too. The railway is not only going to decrease the amount of people traveling in planes, cars, or bus but it will also decrease the amount of time people take to travel in this kind of transportations. A reporter says, “Texas central is planning to build a bullet train route that cut between Dallas and Houston, Trimming about 2 hours off the average driving time, and saving over an hour compared to air travel” (“Proposed”). The railways will cut time for passengers to get to their destination but it will have a bad result later on. Some people agree on building this train because it will be faster to get to one place to another, but they are wrong because it will take costumers away from other transportations, and it will have an impact in the increase of how much each ticket cost. It will destroy land from does that live there. Researchers have found that railways benefit economies by bringing competition to transportation because people will be able to choose from all the varieties. The Researchers are wrong because airline will not have the same amount of people as they do before the high-speed train is build. Not only the airlines but bus stations because people will not notice other transportation. The airlines, the cars, and trains companies will change things from their transportations because they will want to be better than the railways. For example, technology or even the ticket prices. All they would want is to be better than the railway, causing more and more competitions, which means people will expand more on buying the transportation
Whenever we are reminded of NYC, we think of Times Square or The Status of Liberty. However, we always forget what is right under our noses; the NYC subway system. I like to think of the subway system as a labyrinth because of it’s intricate network of passages that guides us to all over NYC. Just by looking at a map of the subway system overwhelms me because it is so hard to imagine how much work was put into making this beautiful yet complex structure. An average New Yorker may ignore the daily lives in the subway system but if you look closely you can see multiplicity of events taking place.
You’re a ninth grader at a school in Philadelphia. The neighborhood is poor, even if not all of the students are. Your school has very little money for things like computers or technology. You walk into second period one day, sit down, and discover that the floor next to your desk is damp. The teacher explains that there is a leak in the roof, and that the school can’t afford to fix it. The school can’t afford to fix the leak or buy computers because it is inadequately funded. So the government kindly lends your school the money to not only fix the leak, but buy computers. But does that necessarily motivate you to improve your grades? Do you suddenly decide to do your homework because the leak is fixed? Probably not. The government sees that your grades remained the same, and two years later, when our school needs to hire more teachers and make the classes smaller, the government denies the school that money. They say that since money didn’t help your grades last time, why should it help you now?

Toronto is a futuristic city with state of the art technologies and latest innovation used in its daily administration, management and development. The city’s mass rapid transit system has become a model for similar projects for developing countries. The main arterial roads and highways are wide enough to allow smooth traffic flow and the Toronto Subway and Rapid Transit system efficiently bears the burden. Toronto also has an extensive network of public transport buses. Toronto Pearson International airport is one of the most important and busiest airports of North America. The city has one of the most advanced health care systems and is a major center for biotechnology and advance medicine research. Toronto is also an important educational hub of North America with top notch technological and research institutes, universities, colleges, cultural institutions are present here. The city is also famous for the CN Tower one of the tallest freestanding structure in the world and which is the most popular and iconic symbol of Toronto. The CN Tower is a communication tower which has again put Toronto as a hub of Communication in the World.
Toronto is the 4th largest city in the world. But Toronto did not become the 4th largest city over night. It has a long list of its economic history and its growth. It has almost 4000 years long history. Toronto was not called Toronto at the beginning. It had multiple names like “Tkaronto”, “Lac Toronto”. Toronto got its name in 1834. In 1793 when British colonial official founded the city Toronto which was then called “Town of York.”
