Post war on industrial organization psychology
After the event of world war and the uprising movement of industrial revolution, with the induction of Hawthorne effect in the area of psychology, industrial organization starts to develop through several major pieces of civil rights legislation. It was in the early 60’s where they started to focus attention towards fairness in the work place. Thus, only I/O trained psychologist are on demand during that era.
It was also been narrated that during this time, the idea of T-training test was developed. A T-group or training group (sometimes also referred to as sensitivity-training group, human relations training group or encounter group) is a form of group training where participants themselves (typically, between eight and 15 people) learn about themselves (and about small group processes in general) through their interaction with each other. They use feedback, problem solving, and role play to gain insights into themselves, others, and groups. There were various psychologists that applied the T- group such as Carl Rogers and even Daniel Goleman. This training concept is highly criticized due to it fluctuation of behaviors.
In the 1970, I/O starts to develop rapidly in understanding other issues such as employee satisfaction and motivation. In the latter decade, behavior in organization was not that concrete as compared to the current decade. B.F Skinner wrote a book Beyond Freedom and Dignity that resulted to the emergence and rising of behavior in organizations. The core of the doctrine of human dignity is presumably just the view that persons have certain rights and should be treated and regarded in ways that observe these rights. Another set of points that shows significant impact on post war is that women are increasingly entering to the realm of workforce and taking on managerial role. With the increment of foreign population in America, psychologist had to understand each other needs. Thus, diversity issues will be prominent challenges with regards to the workplace. With the existence of the idea of cheap labor, I/O psychology had to increase the emphasizing of service jobs requiring human relation skills. There will be impact I/O psychology that includes flexibility with work schedule, family-friendly work policies and other policies that should be ethical and also humanizing in nature. That includes taking care of the elderly and many more that can affect organization stability.
