How To Become a Psychologist The definition of psychology is as follows: “The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.”(Merriam-Webster’s dictionary, 1828) There are many fields of psychology an individual can go into, whether its clinical, forensic, or otherwise Psychology is a very broad field of scientific study that affects many aspects of our lives. There are people who study this science in schools, hospitals, private practices and more. This science also interests me as well. I have already taken psychology in my junior year, and I am currently taking AP psychology in order to gain some credits for college. The study fascinates me; the reason being that it explains our behavior and what makes us different from any other species on this planet. Neuropsychology, includes the following job practices: administering neurological tests, assessing if the patient has a neurological problem, treating patients that have had traumatic brain injuries or illnesses such as alzheimer’s and parkinson’s disease, administering cognitive functioning tests, testifying in the court of law, consulting with companies in order to further develop medicine for neurological disorder treatments, and conduction of research. In industrial psychology psychologists apply theories and research through principles in order to improve the workplace such as: increasing productivity, management, work ethic,and aid companies in order to focus on problems by instructing employees, cultivate performance evaluation criteria and gauge market strategies. I was born in a small town of -----------of underdeveloped country of Bangladesh. I grew up speaking Bengali, wore traditional clothes, created intricate henna designs on women’s hands, and performed classical Bengali music. Since childhood, thought other than becoming a doctor never registered in my mind. You would think that psychology is strictly a run down of the brains way of functioning and mental disorders truth be told , it is actually way more than that. Psychology deals with everything from the way we sleep to the way that we think. You could say that with out psychology we would not know why we do the things we do nor would we be able to fully understand ourselves and interactions with others. Psychology is the study of our minds and every broad aspect of it. In my opinion the three major concepts that people should know about would be : Nature vs. Nurture, Right brain/left brain functioning, and Social norms . What is psychology? In basic terms it is simply the study of the mind, but that very general description has a much wider application as the psychology of today differs from that of two centuries ago.
“Studying psychology is fun because you are always looking for the same things I think a writer should be looking for, which is the story behind the story.” – Christ Cleave. While this might be a romanticized view of psychology, I find the quote by Mr. Cleave accurate due to the high levels of observation and research associated with this field of study. There are more than a dozen specialized areas of psychology and include working with animals and people, studying behaviors, criminals, work environments. Though there are several intriguing areas of psychology, the two that interest me most are experimental psychology and forensic psychology.
Psychology is interesting because it deals with problems that arise from everyday situations that affect a lot of people. Some problems that arise are depressions, eating disorders, and even over compulsive disorders. There are multiple fields of psychology each having different specialties. The fields of psychology range from biological psychology to environmental psychology each differing majorly from each other. There is a large multitude of psychological disorders each one of them can be treated through the use of different psychological methods. These methods vary from the use of therapy in combination with medication to a change in thinking or environment. While the therapy helps alleviate symptoms of their disorder through talking I prefer a biological psychology approach. Biological psychology relates to the use of different biology methods in order to help understand human behavior. Another important aspect of biopsychology is the study of the nervous system as well as how the brain functions and how those systems functions affect human behavior.
Psychology is the scientific study of behavior. Behavior refers to anything an animal or person does, feels, or thinks (Kuther, (2012), p. 2). I chose to study psychology for a variety of reasons: it opens the door to a variety of careers, it can be rewarding, psychology is a topic that interests me, and it’s a way to impact peoples lives for the better. One great reason is that as you major in psychology, it gives the opportunity for more knowledge and can be applied in a variety of employment settings (Wegnek and Buskist, (2012), p.1).
Imagine working in a daycare with children of different ages. Children of different ethnic backgrounds, culture, race, thoughts, behavior, and economic status. We may notice that each child has a unique personality; some children may be difficult to manage and others are mannerly. Some people may wonder the reason for this diversity in children. Obliviously, I have become one of those people. I have worked and volunteer at daycares facilities multiple occasions that it has inspired me to pursue a career in psychology. However, attending community college has also influence me to pursue a career in psychology.
