“Yellow Rain” Conspiracy Theory or Fiction?

647 Words2 Pages

Yellow Rain, a mystery in itself for the last 30 years. Depending on which government you were talking to it is either a conspiracy theory/hoax or a fictional substance. The Vietnamese believe this to be a real issue, however after testing this substance that fell from the sky in 1975 as a yellow sticky substance hence yellow rain it came back negative several times as being any sort of believed T2 Mycotoxin. Mycotoxin (tricholthecene) is derived from a fungus called Fusarium as a naturally occurring byproduct that is toxic. Its molecular formula is: C24H34O9, its molecular mass is: 466.52g mol-1 and is unsoluble in water. However U.S. scientists believe the symptoms the Vietnamese and people of Laos felt and blamed on this event was created by large swarms of giant Asian honeybees (Encyclopedia Britannica)

In 1981 United States Secretary of State Alexander Haig openly accused the Soviet Union of supplying this toxin to Communists found in Vietnam and or Laos. The Soviet Union denied these allegations. Secretary Haig had physical evidence from several places in Southeast Asia analyzed and reviled the possibility of three different mycotoxins. (Jonathan B. Tucker) So which do you believe it is a T-2 mycotxin or bee dung? This is still a mystery that remains even today whether it’s because the government doesn’t want to expose the truth, plausibly because it had its hands in part of this conspiracy or because of the value of revenue coming from the countries in question. It leaves it open to suggestion when the government classifies most of the documentation as Secret or higher to allude information from the public.
