“Seventy-five percent of U.S. high school seniors reported working at least part time during the school year.” One possible reason that so many high schoolers have jobs while still in school is so that they can have money to pay for expenses. “Mainly, they are looking for jobs while in school to help cushion some of those costs and everyday expenses.” For example, if a high schoolers wants to go out with friends they are going to need money to spend on food, clothes, movies, etc. This research project examines the negative effects on high schoolers who work while still in school. “One of the disadvantages of being a student while holding a job is that they are often short on time and commonly find themselves with limited time to study.” Students who have a job don’t have time to study when they get home from school because they have to leave right away or soon after to go to work. Then they are too tired to do any school work when they get home from work. “In addition, working more than 30 hours a week during high school was associated with lower levels of future education attainment.” Students who work a large number of hours a week have less motivation to accomplish higher levels of academics. “The Marsh-Kleitman study also found that students who worked in high school were less likely to be involved in extracurricular activities.” When students work too much they can’t get involved in extracurricular activities so they won’t be able to make new friends. “They may feel left out and isolated from friends, especially on the weekends if they are at work and their friends are out enjoying themselves.” If students are working on the weekends they won’t have time to hangout with friends and have fun.
