More than 14,000 children are treated annually for injuries..( consumer US product Safety Commission) Tablets should be used in place of textbooks because they are state mandated, they are easier to carry around, and they are cheaper than textbooks. like it or not standardized testing mandated by the federal and state government is now moving online. Luther said that means No more paper and pencil test. so if you ask a third grader or any kid that's in school to write about an experience that they’ve had they have to be able to type. so state standards are requiring that kids as low as third grade to be able to type. so pencils and paper are no longer needed. and technology must be used as a bridge to get students excited and enthusiastic about learning and to inspire teachers to help get students motivated about learning. and this technology will change the world of education.(Joe klein,NY school …show more content…
A school with 100 teachers uses on average 250,000 pieces of paper annually. A school of 1,000 students spends anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 a month on paper, ink and toner. tablets can take a lot of that paper away. if students used tablets not only would they save trees but they would also save an average of 250 dollars per students which is the average cost of textbooks for students, but they would also save a lot of trees. If students switch to tablets instead of textbooks a lot of money would be saved which could go toward other things like fundraising for sports and transportation for after school activities like tutoring and clubs. ( Ryne D. grimes, teenik.org,) Tablets shouldn’t be used in place of textbooks because of medical research proving that the light can cause permanent eye damage. Retina damage can possibly occur from spending too much time looking at digital screens. It’s not just the screens themselves that cause the problem, it’s the ‘blue light’ they emit that can be damaging to your eyes.serious damage to the retina and once the cells are destroyed there is no possible way of repairing them and the cells are damaged for life.(what digital screens are actually doing to your eyes, rebuild your
Tablets are becoming more and more popular and they are replacing books in schools, and should schools be doing this? Tablets are great and all but they cause so much of a distraction and they come with problems in the near future, textbooks are far more superior and get their point across to the reader, while textbooks have been around for centuries. Basically the people want to get rid of textbooks and embrace the opportunity of tablets for the replacement of textbooks. Tablets are said to hold more information than a outdated textbooks and can be constantly updated at the users will or even automatically. On the other hand textbooks should be kept because of their longevity of being in the teaching system. Also textbooks do not come with all the problems that arise with the tablets and the excuses of the students not doing their homework. Textbooks have been around from the beginning of the books. They provide the student the information needed to succeed in school and keep them focussed in school. Therefore we need to keep textbooks so the book in general will not happen and
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, from ages 5-18 in the 2011-2012 year there were more than 13,700 children that have been reported with backpack-related injuries. If a student has a tablet instead of many textbooks, students won’t have to carry a backpack or if they have one it will be lighter. If tablets are available, then the students will pick them over textbooks because they have an advantage of being lighter. I believe that schools and their districts should buy tablets or invest in tablets because they are way lighter than
In today’s world, technology has become a big part of everyone’s lives. Technology is becoming faster and better every day. Technology is able to help us in transportation, communication, information, learning, etc. Now technology is starting to be incorporated in school education. Through examining price, capacity vs. weight, and information/skills taught, it is evident that tablets are slowly becoming superior to textbooks.
In the past five or six years, iPads have become a big part of educating America’s youth and have been used in many schools. Archbishop Riordan High School implemented an iPad program in 2013 that provided textbooks and other in-class materials to students on the device. iPad’s, while nice to use as educational tools, have some disadvantages. iPads have many distractions available on them, there is no real way for teachers to monitor what teachers are doing on them, and they make it harder for students to socialize. Despite all these cons, there are a few pros to using iPads in schools.
The U.S. spends over 7 billion dollars on textbooks a year, and in many cases, those textbooks are out of date(“The Future of Education: Tablets vs. Textbooks” online). Schools have been using textbooks for as long as anyone can remember. In fact, some textbooks were found from as early as the 16th century(Goslin online). With the many new developments in technology, it’s time for a change. Schools should store away those heavy textbooks and make the switch to electronic tablets. Tablets would have many advantages over traditional textbooks; they provide a more enjoyable learning experience for students, they help students perform better in school, they would be more portable and they’re cheaper than regular textbooks.
The benefits of a tablet far out-weight the old school textbooks. You can fit several volumes on a tiny tablet that weighs less than a pound. You have the benefit of surfing the web to utilize other resources. You can access libraries all over the world without leaving your couch.
Some say that technology is a distraction and hinders the students from fully learning and developing important skills that they claim only the interactions with the teacher can provide. Teachers have said that technology is a powerful tool that allows them to introduce and demonstrate learning activities in a completely new way. It has been studied and proven that most kids are more motivated and interested in the concepts they are supposed to learn when the teaching tool of technology is used. A fifth grade teacher stated, “Technology is the ultimate carrot for students. It's somet...
Technology is getting more and more advanced everyday. Everywhere you go, you will see, hear, and use technology. Each week, it seems as though some company has come out with "the next big thing" that everyone wants to get their hands on. Technology runs our lives, and when we let it interfere with our studies, it can be a major downfall. Giving a student an iPad is like giving candy to a small child. Students have the ability to shop, play games, talk to friends, take pictures, and do many other things without having to get out of their seat. When interviewing twelve students at Borgia High School, each one of them said that they have been on other applications during school when they shouldn't be. Students find it a struggle to pay attention in cla...
There is proof from consumer reports, polls, and experiments that screens and e-readers do not recreate some tactile experiences that reading on paper can provide. People have a hard time working through long texts online in an intuitive and satisfying way. Consequently, these navigational issues may subtly inhibit reading comprehension (Jabr, 2013). It seems that technology is working hard to make reading in digital format as close to reading a print book that maybe print books should be kept and another use for this technology should be
... have exceeded our expectations, their ability to improve the classroom is unmistakably astonishing. Tablets are said to have problems which are currently referred to as “computer vision syndrome”. The list of symptoms includes eyestrain, blurry vision, dry eyes, and even headaches. Most of the new generation is subject to this anyhow with the rise of personal computers and large television screens. What they do not like to disclose is the alternative problems caused by a heavy backpack. According to a U.S. Consumer Product Commission over 13,700 kids between the ages of 5 to 18 were treated for injuries that were caused by backpacks in a single year. One solution they recommended was to leave extra books at home, but that is pretty hard if each teacher requires students to bring their books to class daily. This could easily be prevented with a tablet loaded with their textbooks. The average tablet only weighs one to two pounds, whereas a backpack full of books could weigh 20 to 30lbs. That is above 2000% more of a difference. Tablets will help reduce the strain a backpack would have on a
One of the reasons is that textbooks lead to back pains and shoulder problems. “Kids who wear their backpacks full of textbooks over their shoulders, as many do, since it looks better or just feels easier- may end up leaning to one side to offset the extra weight. They might develop lower and upper back pain and strain their shoulders and neck”. “Doctors say they are observing a growing number of children suffering serious back pain as the result of carrying around overloaded backpacks because children’s spines are still growing. Thus, the heavy packs and tilted gait they carry could result into long term back problems” “According to data from the United States Product Safety Commission, over the period from 1994-2000 more than 23,000 youths ages 6 to 18 were treated for backpack related injuries, such as contusions, sprains, and strains to the back and shoulders, and fractures” (Procon.org). Children are suffering as a result of heavy back packs full of textbooks and many believe that this is a problem that can be totally changed by the introduction of net book computers to replace the text
As our generation continues to progress, technology also takes its course with us. Current day technology can provide an excellent aid for scholars attending school or even big named companies and businesses. On an average, most schools in America use textbooks to teach their students. This may be the default way for decades, but that should be changed soon as technological advances are coming in tact. Although it may just be a small handheld device, it can pack a punch for its size and can out win an old textbook anyday. Tablets enable scholars to branch out to many other school resources than just their textbooks.
