There are many amazing creatures that have been on this earth. One of the most incredible features of this animal is the way the animal survives. The polar bear is an animal that can live in very cold temperatures, due to the features of the polar bears they are able to survive in these harsh environments. The polar bears also help us understand what might be happening in the arctic ecosystem. Polar bears help us gain an understanding of what is happening throughout the Arctic, as a polar bear at risk may signal something is wrong elsewhere in the arctic marine ecosystem. One of the first features that helps the polar survive is that they are the largest land carnivore. Polar bears are the world’s largest land predators, weighing up to 1300 lbs and measuring up to 3 m (10 ft.) tall. On average they live to be about 25 years old. Some of these features help the polar bear survive. Some more are that polar bears are also equipped with strong noses. They use their powerful sense of smell when hunting for seals, their main source of food. They can smell a seal’s breathing hole, or aglu, up to one mile away. Once located, a polar bear will wait patiently by the hole and attack the seal’s head when it comes up for air. In ideal hunting conditions, the bear will just eat the seal fat, leaving the carcass for other animals. For example in fall, a seal cuts ten to fifteen breathing holes in the ice, using the sharp claws on its fore flippers. Seals keep their breathing holes open all winter long, even in ice up to two meters thick. They surface about every five to fifteen minutes at one of the holes or use air pockets trapped under the ice when available. Polar bears attack by waiting for seals to breathe at the openings.
