Leadership is needed and used every day, and in any activity, one participates in. Leaders are those who are or choose their position, but that is not all they must do. Leaders must be selfless, honest, and a great listener; without key characteristics, a "leader" would just be someone who enjoyed bossing others around. Selflessness is when your greatest interest is not in yourself, but in the ones around you. Dictionary.com states, "(selflessness is) having little or no concern for oneself, especially with regard to fame, position, money, etc." In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, the setting of the story is on a farm that is taken over by the animals who once worked for the farmer. This book is not talking about animals though, this book was an allegory which represented communism in the 1900's. One of the characters in the story is a pig named Napoleon. Napoleon is a representation of Stalin, who was a horrible dictator in the 1900's. In the book, much like in real life, Napoleon was a horrible leader, and was very selfish. Throughout the entire book, there were countless times when Napoleon would do something not for the good of the people, but for the good of himself. The act of listening is patiently waiting for the other to tell their story or their thoughts, while not interrupting. You must also be thinking of trying to understand the story, not thinking of how to respond. In the book Animal Farm, Napoleon is a leader that doesn’t listen, he doesn’t care about what others have to say, which is why he’s a terrible leader.
