The American Revolution was a battle between the first 13 colonies and the British government. It was a result of the settlers revolted against the British government about unfair laws and taxes. There were a series of events that led to the revolutionary war. Unfair taxes, the colonists’ boycott of British goods, the king’s intolerable acts, and the formation of the First Continental Congress were all contributors to the start of the Revolutionary War. The British spent a lot of money in the French-Indian war, leaving them in a great deal of debt. Since the British were in this large amount of debt, they decided to implement taxes on most of the products that the colonists used to get tax-free. For example, Britain started taxing tea. The British government sent a large shipment of taxed tea for the colonists. The colonists did not want to pay taxes on tea, so they refused to take the tea off the ship. Then at night, a group of colonists dressed as American Indians boarded the ship and threw the tea overboard. What was interesting was that they didn’t hurt the ship at all. One of these laws was directly related to the Boston Tea Party. The Boston Port Act closed the Boston port until the colonists paid for the tea they had ruined in the sea. Another example is the Quartering Act, which forced people to provide housing for the British soldiers even if they did not want to. Colonists were afraid of having British soldiers in their houses with their families because of the Boston Massacre, which occurred a few years earlier. The British still held onto the conviction that they had the right to tax the Americans in any way they deemed necessary. The Declaratory Act was followed by the Townshend Acts of 1767. This imposed taxes on all imported goods from Britain, which caused the colonies to refuse trading with Britain. Six years passed before another upsetting act was passed. In 1773, the Tea Act placed taxes on tea, threatening the power of the colonies. The colonies, however, fought back by pouring expensive tea into the Boston harbor in an event now known as the Boston Tea Party. The enraged Parliament quickly passed the Intolerable Acts, shutting down the port of Boston and taking control over the colonies.
