My desire to do a course in Adult nursing was first established when I started my job as a Carer with a private health care company that provides services for elderly people, people with learning, physical disabilities, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease and Multiple sclerosis. During this time I enjoyed caring for service users and developing professional relationships with them and making a difference to their lives which is the key aspect that attracts me to the nursing profession.

During my job as a carer I was responsible for talking to families of the service users and informing them about the service user on a daily basis. I had to work with other care professionals who taught me the efficiency of team work and how important it is to follow instructions. Also I was responsible for reporting every incident or any concerns I had regarding the service user to my service manager, by doing this it helped me develop my communication skills which is essential for a nurse as they often have to communicate with doctors, patients and other co-workers and good communication skills amongst doctors, nurses and other staff is one of the reasons why NHS are successful for providing excellent care to patients. Since Punjabi is my mother tongue it helped me converse with a wide range of people who come from different backgrounds and cultures, even though some service users couldn’t speak the same language I learnt how to communicate with them through observing their body language as well as gestures and taught me the art of nonverbal communication. As a Carer, I understood the importance of empathy, one service user that I cared for had recently lost her husband to pneumonia, even though I couldn’t do anything,...

During my spare time I used to attend a Bollywood dance class at a local fitness centre and I enjoy Bollywood dancing, as it gives me the chance to relieve stress as well as maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. I believe physical endurance for a nurse is extremely important since as a nurse I would be dealing with frequent physical tasks and standing for long periods of time. I enjoy cooking and watching movies.

I would describe nursing as rewarding and being able to develop the wellbeing of patients. My goal is to become a district nurse with the help of further training.
