Explain coping mechanisms vs Defense mechanisms Sybil has a particular way of coping with external factors that are out of her control. she has a pattern of avoiding anything that seem out of the norm for her. When richard tried to get to know her ,since it was not the norm she would change her personality in order to avoid any uncomfortable situation that she deemed unnesscary. Her protective mechanism was to avoid anyone that could potential harm her or have a close bond with her expect for Dr.wilberg she did not let anyone become close and avoided any sort of human attachment for the fear that theey too like her mother would lash out at her any given moment. Will is put into a more comfortable setting when Dr.Maguire takes him to the park so that way he sense their on the same level and that Dr.Maguire is not superior. Sybil on the other hand usually meets in Dr.Wilbergs office but alike Will the settings tend to change.Now some notable difference between the too aside from both cleary having different disorders. Sybils was traumitized when she was a young girl and was bearly learning what good and bad meant but she was abused by her schrizophrenic mother and her father clearly had little to do in her life so he let it proccedd.Will on the contrarer was abused as he was in his teen years which cause trauma to be percieved differently.Will was also abused by his foster family which cause some of the tenstion to devlope. Aside from these notable difference gender has in part to do with they way their character developed Sybil became shy and did not like contact she also was hurting on the inside which explains he coping mechanism since women tend to reach to pain by keeping it in so,internal pain. Will is a man, the way males cope is through pushing their pain outward, in Wills case he cusses fights, misbehaves and hangs out with the wrong crowd, it in part has to do with his gender. 3.Why is Mulitiple personalitiy disorder assocated with schropenia? These members of a family that operate completely outside of our generation’s norms, are constantly unsure of themselves and their station within the binary not only of their familial unit, but within the gender binary that is established for them to follow. Throughout the story of the strange family, each character goes through a different arch that changes them irrevocably whether it is able to be perceived or not by those around them. The only male, Stanley is initially the macho force in the home who controls everything without question. He has no consequences for his actions against his wife and is never held accountable for treating the people around him poorly; this lasts until Blanche arrives. Blanche is an outwardly demure, but spirited young woman who after experiencing untold misfortune breaks mentally and decides to no longer care what others may think of her. She lives her life lavishly and foolishly by having dalliances with younger or richer men who shower her with gifts and attention to get sex from her all too willing form. Her effect on Stanley is one of temptation and challenge; she continually tries to convince her sister that she is too good for the man and in turn fosters a resentment for her in him. Stella acts as the antithesis of Stanley and Blanche’s extreme personalities. She is innocence and purity where they are the darkness that threatens to overtake her life.     Sybil was a very important, and one of the most popular, accounts of Dissociative Identity. The book went into great detail about the suffering Sybil went through, and the lengths that her therapist took to try to validate the claim and treat her personalities, through verification with family members to visiting her childhood doctor. (Putnam). This account not only gave therapists a basis to compare their dissociative patients against, but also reopened the public’s eyes to this disorder. (Putnam 35). It was classified in The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders in 1980, only six years after the books release. (Kihlstrom). Now there is some concern over the validity of this account, which only fuels the controversy more. There are still other studies of Dissociative Identity Disorder, such as The Five of Me (1977), The Three Faces of Eve (1957) and many other true case studies. The Three Faces of Eve was also a book turned into a movie that, so far, has been proven as a valid case. When Mrs. Adams says, “Some places have already quit lotteries.” Old Man Warner comes back and says, “Nothing but trouble in that...pack of young fools.” Later on, Old Man Warner tells us that he has been in the lottery seventy-seven times. (32) This example demonstrates how if you follow tradition, the society will not be violent toward you. Old Man Warner clearly respects the tradition and therefore has not been harmed by it, even though he has been apart of it many times. Another example of society vs character is at the end of the story when Mrs. Hutchinson is about to be chosen, a girl whispers “I hope it’s not Nancy.” Old Man Warner replies to this by saying, “It’s not the way it used to be.” (34) Old Man Warner’s response shows how he is aware of the manipulation taking place. Also, at the very end of the story, Mrs. Hutchinson has the piece of paper with the black dot in her hand but has yet to show it to the crowd. Mr. Summers says “It’s Tessie… Show us her paper, Bill.” (35) This example shows us that Mr. Summers already knew who was going to be picked and that it was the society vs. character, who is Mrs. Hutchinson.
