The research study was conducted at Westbrook Park Elementary School located in Clifton Heights, Pennsylvania. Westbrook Park is a public elementary school in Upper Darby Township with a student population of 472 students. The student population consisted of 48 % Caucasian, 42% African-American, 6 % Asian, 4% Asian/Pacific Islander. The teacher to student ratio is 15:1 with 44% of students receiving subsidized lunch.
The sample consisted of three elementary school teachers, fifteen parents and thirty students from two third grade classrooms. The ages of the students ranges from 8 thru 10. Teachers, parents and students all signed informed consent form. Student and teacher surveys were administered during a regular class session. Students were instructed to complete surveys thoroughly and to the best of their knowledge. They were further told to ask for clarification if they had questions. The time range for survey completion was between 30 and 45 minutes. Parent surveys were emailed to their attention for completion and to be returned within a three day period. Interview sessions were scheduled two days after surveys were administered. Teacher’s interviews were held in the school’s conference room. Each interview was 45 minutes to an hour. Due to busy parent schedule, interviews were scheduled around their time. 8 parents requested to participate in a Skype interview session as oppose to meeting face to face. My assignment is a combination of two interviews. I interviewed an Assistant Principal, Ms. Katis Romig, as well as, our Curriculum Director, Mrs. Maria Petkanas. They are both responsible for the curriculum development and instruction for the school where I work, P.S. 811Q. Let us say hypothetically, though this situation occurs often, that a grade ten class has just been assigned a homework assignment that requires massive amounts of research. The student with the high-speed internet connection and a bookshelf of encyclopedias has an unfair advantage over the other students. Furthermore, students might develop questions about the assignment and teachers will be unable to deal with student problems. Resulting in sloppy homework which neither benefits the student nor the teacher. In relation to the lack of resources in some homes, there is also a lack of support from parents.
In order to collect data I need to have a smaller sample because it takes more time since I am meeting with them and asking open ended questions. Also try to organize and categorize the opinions and perceptions of the students views and their parents perceptions. I will try to find a pattern through all the interviews of parent involvement. I will also try to categorize the similarities I find within students whose parents are involved and those whose parents are not involved in the education life. Data Analysis Steps:
Sometimes a student is successful in one area and having difficulty in another or a student has trouble using their words to communicate and becomes aggressive. At this center, the teachers have the tools to assess each child and the parents are interested in knowing the strengths and supports their child needs. The article Understanding Families, states that there should be “opportunities for families to discuss their beliefs about their children, what they want for their children, and how they support their children’s development” (Christian, 7). As conferences occur every 6 months, parents also communicate with the school and teachers via email and during drop off and pick up times. Another great example of parent communication is in the article Building Bridges from School to Home. The teacher builds relationships with parents by getting them to understand the areas that their child struggles and continues to strive in. Making sure they know that their child will master these skills when they are ready (Lawrence-Lightfoot, 2). One of the reasons homework should be banned is because of the unnecessary stress and strain it creates for students. Many students are left pulling their hair out at homework time. Students struggle with homework for different reasons. Some of which are because they do not understand the assigned homework, or they are not being challenged, and quite possibly because they have hit their daily threshold for learning and have no more to give. I attended a second grade class at Smallville Elementary on February 22, 2014; the class began promptly at 0855. There are 26 children in this second grade class. There are 15 male students and 11 female students. The student diversity is 2 Hispanics, 1 African-American, 1 East Indian, and 1 New Zealander (White but with an extreme accent). Three children were left-handed.
