Many college students will find themselves asking, “How am I to pay for school?” and it often seems to go unanswered. In recent years, many programs have developed to offer students a solution to that problem. The solution is volunteering. Whether you have a specific interest such as disease control, developing communities, medicine, or simply to just volunteer your time, these programs offer a versatility that is unparalleled. These programs take recently graduated or current students and help them to optimize their skills in a setting in which they can grow from, all while paying off their student loans. Not only can a student gain hands on experience in a new and rewarding setting through volunteering, they can specialize their skills in community and teamwork.
Understanding the benefits of volunteering is a vital part in truly gaining from the experience. I believe that many people begin a volunteer position with their own notions of how they may positively effect a situation; but can’t hold an interest for long, thus dropping the job. Many places are constantly looking for volunteers for this reason. It’s not that the job itself is bad or that it is too demanding, it generally is because the original volunteers cannot retain an interest in their job. I have personally volunteered and seen this happen many times, and it is why I think that having a deeper understanding of a volunteer position is key. If every volunteer approaches their job knowing that it may not always be exciting, but that what they are doing can genuinely help someone in need will change the aspects that many people find to be negative about volunteering. A volunteer can provide a great service and make tasks easier for everyone involved; if they are aware...

Volunteering is a wonderful gateway to help give back to the community, and to provide a service to those in need. There is much to be learned from volunteering, and there are always positions available seeking the help of those who are willing to give their time.

It helps a person make new friends and it is good for increasing the number of people one can fall back to when they need someone to listen to their problems. It is also helpful with building one’s social and relationship skills. “[Volunteer service] gives [a person] the opportunity to practice and develop social skills” (Saisan and Smith). Another benefit is that it is good for one’s physical and mental well-being. “Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.”
Over the years I have been very involved in my community and school. Being a part of something helps to define who you are as a person and the principles and values you hold as important. A personal experience that helps to show my talents and skills can be illustrated by my trip to Italy last April with the MHS Language Department.
volunteering is a person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task. In this report i will talk about the different types of volunteering in the:
I went out to collect cans for the food shelter, I helped out at the bowling special olympics, and in December I volunteered to help set up a 5k races Autism, and the thing I took out of my volunteering experiences so far is that everyone has a story and to take the time to listen to others and connect with the world around you. In my experiences you can learn more serving people for an hour than you can learn in a week of classes. My only regret in my freshman year of college is that I didn’t figure out this sooner than I did.
Universities have recently started allowing students to volunteer for nonprofit groups and as a payment or reward they can receive lower college expenses or even free college. This is letting the students decide if they want to work for their education and walk out without or little debt. By doing this we are giving students a learning experience on how you can earn what you want rather than letting them pay their way through college. Colleges that have tried this solution have noticed a great amount of success (Laboissiere). Students are taking the opportunity serious and tend to take their education more serious, since they already “worked” for
To volunteer means too, “freely offer to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task”. Anybody with spare time should offer their time to a business needing help. A citizen can offer their volunteer services at an animal shelter, a library, a habitat for humanity, a national park, or many others. The project that i participated in allowed me to help the community as well as gain knowledge for the degree i am pursuing, all while letting me learn about the government's relationship to the activity i participated in. During my service learning, i was able to see how many student learning outcomes were used in the zoo world.
Give Back to Your Local Area This Year Giving back to your local community is one of the most admirable and selfless things you can do. When you take the time to put your community needs above your wants, it becomes infectious and causes others to do the same. The following are some ways you can give back to your local community this year. Serve Meals at a Shelter Many non-profits don’t have enough help on any given day. When they have a feeding event, they are even more disadvantaged because they don’t have enough people to help them fix and serve meals to the individuals in need of help.
Thesis Statement: Volunteering in your local community will help those around you and help you feel like you have contributed something positive and it is easier than most people think.
1. Please describe any previous community service you have been involved in and what you have obtained from volunteering. I have volunteered at quite a few organizations in Philadelphia including American Red Cross Club, SHARE Food Program, and Chosen 300. While volunteering for the American Red Cross, I was given the opportunity to spearhead fundraisers for blood drives and victims of natural disasters. Never the less, other goals included raising donations of food and clothing for families in need around the North Philadelphia area as well as wrapping gifts during the holiday for disadvantaged families.
Community is defined as, “An interacting population of various kinds of individuals in a common location”. Because there are various kinds of people in a community that also means there are many different situations those people could be in. It is important to give back to the community not only because it feels good but also to just help other people. I like going to the Boys & Girls Club because it gives me a positive place to go outside of school where I get to participate in fun activities and meet new people and give back to others.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
These factors can be summarized through four theoretical models of volunteer work that presently guide the literature. What might be called the volunteer motivations model emphasizes individuals’ motivations for or goals in volunteering. Research indicates that people give service for a variety of reasons, for example, to learn new skills, to develop the self, to enhance self-esteem, to prepare for a career, to express personal values and community commitment, and even to reduce ego-conflicts or identity threats (Omoto &Snyder, 1990, 1995; Janoski, Musick & Wilson, 1998). Motivation researchers suggest that volunteering can serve different functions (i.e., motivations) for different people and sometimes multiple functions for a single individual(Omoto & Snyder, 1990; Penner & Finkelstein, 1998). Thus, selection into volunteer service may not be broadly socially patterned or
The emotional benefits of volunteering are an integral part of my personal growth. Volunteering showed me how rewarding is to give back to my community It is important to me to touch the lives of others in a positive way. The truth is that any amount of time we can give is going to be enough to make a significant difference in someone else life. Volunteering has made me find out more about myself because I gained valuable life experiences, met new people and felt like I made a difference.
Volunteering with the Eight Days of Hope organization has had a huge personal impact on my life. When I first decided that I would volunteer, I did not expect for it to leave such a huge impression on me as it did. My experience volunteering with Eight Days of Hope had not only changed my point of view on volunteering, it also taught me to be more courteous. While volunteering for the Eight Days of Hope organization in Tupelo, Mississippi, I was able to become more of a sociable person through my actions and my thoughts by associating and working with the other volunteers.
Many students are barely even passing the regular school curriculum, and opponents believe that adding the additional load of mandatory service hours will discourage teens from even wanting to graduate. Also, mandatory service is usually assigned by a court as punishment to delinquents. “In a small number of cases, community service is required by the court system as restitution for delinquent offenses” (Planty and Bozick, 2006). Contrary to this opposing view, helping others is the best feeling that one could ever have. What is a volunteer program?
