The film Pay it Forward is an exceptional example of how one person, can do even one small positive thing that can create a ripple effect on the world. The main character Trevor, is a young boy that has a vision to make a difference in the world by with a small idea. The movie shows that his idea can effect many and go farther than intended when it is contingent upon people doing the right thing. This concept exemplifies many Christian messages in doing generous acts for others, while expecting nothing in return.
The Organization The organization that I volunteered at was the Carroll County Food Pantry in Carrollton, Kentucky. This operation runs every Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3-5 p.m. for all community members, and on every third Wednesday 9:30 am-12: 30 pm specifically for the elderly. Throughout the week, the pantry gathers numerous volunteers. In fact, every month the local churches of Carroll County will rotate and work the food pantry on assigned days.
After watching Pay It Forward, it was easy to parallel elements from the movie to communication in general. Similarities between the cycle of paying it forward and communication can be easily discussed through all of the definitions of communication. For the purpose of this paper, I will link one of the oldest definitions of communication and paying to forward, to show the parallelism. The ancient definition of communication defines communication as: the act of mutual giving and receiving. This act of mutual giving and receiving is very apparent in the story told in the movie.

During the month of October, my AVID class went on a field trip to the Milpitas food pantry located at 1440 Main Street. This is a facility where those in financial struggles can visit and receive supplies. These are everyday essential products, such as food, clothes, towels, and hygiene items. Feed the hungry Keep granola bars in your car to pass out to people in need at stoplights- it's easy to picture the scene: the average escape to Chicago interrupted on an exit ramp by some downtrodden looking figure holding a cardboard sign. Situations like these have increasing difficult because money given could lead to drug or alcohol purchase, though you feel like you have a moral obligation to provide something. Therefore, the best method of giving would be sustenance in food to get them through the cold, lonely winter nights. Take a friend out to lunch, your treat- one of the laughable qualms about having a day off from school or half day is scrambling to make the plans the day before. A great place to start any plan is to involve food, and surprising your friends by offering to cover the bill brightens everyone's day.
Volunteering in your local community is great way to give back and set a positive example at the same time. Let’s take a look at some of the problems in our community that affect many people.
This year, I had the opportunity to give back to the community in many ways. I volunteered at Helping Hands, Meals on Wheels, and the county Science Museum. These volunteering experiences further opened my eyes to the needs of my community and the many opportunities to serve by volunteering.
Your food pantry also needs to make sure they send out lots of letters and notifications to the local schools, so that the parents will be aware of the food pantry and know what is going on. The last thing that you can do is put flyers up in all your local stores in your community. You need to make sure that you do this so everyone will be aware of you, if they ever need some extra help. This will help all the people that may eventually need some help in their future.
