Will you still love your father if he abandoned you? Will you still meet your ex-husband or ex-wife if you divorce with him or her? Most of you probably would say that is absolutely impossible. But in Because My Father Always Said He Was the Only Indian Who Saw Jimi Hendrix Play “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Woodstock, these two questions’ answer are yes. The author develops Victor as a main character, and narrates Victor’s family from Victor’s view. Victor’s parents’ marriage is deeply flawed, to the point that they seek a divorce. Although Victor and his father have had many intimate moments and understand each other well, Victor’s father ultimately leaves his son. It is so cruel for a little boy that his father abandoned him, especially for a boy who has so much wonderful memories about his dad. But Victor still misses those good times he had with his father and hopes that his father will return one day. Victor “stood on the porch all night long and imagined his father’s motorcycles and guitars, until the sun rose so bright”( Alexie 331), because he misses his dad, he even makes a dream for himself to imagine his dad is waiting for him outside. It is kind of sad to read these heartbroken details, no one would like to see a little boy disappointed. But Victor has to try to get used to the fact that his father is no longer living with him. Back to the time that Victor’s parents did not get divorce, Victor would even “ would fall asleep under the table with his head near his father’s feet” (Alexie, 326). What ‘s more, when Victor recollects his father, he says “call me over and hold me tight with his arms, his bad breath and body odor covering me like a blanket” (Alexie 326). In general, covering a blanket makes us feel good. Victor would use covering a blanket to describe his father’s bad breath and body odor, which shows us how he feels about his father, that is, Victor loves him no matter what shortcoming he has. Even though Victor’s father’s abandonment hurts Victor, those good old days will stay in Victor’s heart forever.
