Although Victor and his father have had many intimate moments and understand each other well, Victor’s father ultimately leaves his son. It is so cruel for a little boy that his father abandoned him, especially for a boy who has so much wonderful memories about his dad. But Victor still misses those good times he had with his father and hopes that his father will return one day. Victor “stood on the porch all night long and imagined his father’s motorcycles and guitars, until the sun rose so bright”( Alexie 331), because he misses his dad, he even makes a dream for himself to imagine his dad is waiting for him outside. It is kind of sad to read these heartbroken details, no one would like to see a little boy disappointed. But Victor has to try to get used to the fact that his father is no longer living with him. Back to the time that Victor’s parents did not get divorce, Victor would even “ would fall asleep under the table with his head near his father’s feet” (Alexie, 326). What ‘s more, when Victor recollects his father, he says “call me over and hold me tight with his arms, his bad breath and body odor covering me like a blanket” (Alexie 326). In general, covering a blanket makes us feel good. Victor would use covering a blanket to describe his father’s bad breath and body odor, which shows us how he feels about his father, that is, Victor loves him no matter what shortcoming he has. For his reward, the government assigns Jun Do to a listening position on a fishing boat where he becomes a hero for fighting the Americans with a story that the fishing crew and he invented to keep from getting placed in a prison camp after to one of their crewmates defects. Jun Do then goes to Texas as a translator, where he learns about freedom and other cultures. When the mission fails the government sends him to a camp where Jun Do’s name and identity die.

The poem “Those Winter Sundays” displays a past relationship between a child and his father. Hayden makes use of past tense phrases such as “I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking” (6) to show the readers that the child is remembering certain events that took place in the past. Although the child’s father did not openly express his love towards him when he was growing up, the child now feels a great amount of guilt for never thanking his father for all the things he actually did for him and his family. Victor’s father left his family because according to Thomas, “when they were seven years old, when Victor’s father still lived with the family, Thomas closed his eyes and told Victor this story: your father’s heart is weak. He is afraid of his own family, he is afraid of you. Late at night he sits in the dark. Watches the television until there’s nothing but white noise. Sometimes he feels like he wants to buy a motorcycle and ride away. He wants to run and hide. He doesn’t want to be found” (512). When Victor’s father left, he never truly forgave him. Readers know that because of the details told at the beginning of the story and through the quote that was used in the second paragraph. Although he felt some resentment towards his father, he still felt obligated to bring him back to the reservation. That is where the theme of family comes into the story. Victor’s father died in his hot trailer and was not found for at least a week. Victor knew the trailer his father was staying had to have smelt ripe. But he did not care, as explained in the story, he says,“but there might be something valuable in there and I was talking about pictures and letters and stuff like that” (515). Sandy Wilson, the author of Daddy’s Apprentice: incest, corruption, and betrayal: a survivor’s story, was the victim of not only sexual abuse but physical and emotional abuse as well, in addition to being a product of incest. Sandy Wilson’s story began when she was about six years old when her birth father returns home from incarceration, and spans into her late teens. Her father returning home from prison was her first time meeting him, as she was wondered what he looked like after hearing that he would be released (Wilson, 2000, p. 8). Not only was her relationship with her father non-existent, her relationship with her birth mother was as well since she was for most of her young life, cared for by her grandmother and grandfather. When she was told that her birth mother coming to visit she says, “…I wish my mother wouldn’t visit. I never know what to call her so I don’t all her anything. Not her name, Kristen. Not mother. Not anything (Wilson, 2000, p. 4).” This quote essentially demonstrated the relationship between Sandy and her mother as one that is nonexistent even though Sandy recognizes Kristen as her birth mother.
