While many people understand the importance of veterinary clinics and veterinary hospitals when it comes to taking care of their pets and livestock, what people often overlook is that while the veterinarian themselves are very important to the welfare of the animals, the veterinary technicians and assistants play an equally important role. Without the help from a vet assistant and technicians, a veterinarian would not be able to perform their duties as quickly and efficiently as they do, since they would have to take the extra time to deal with all of the smaller, yet very important jobs that go into this field. Becoming a veterinary technician or assistant requires a lot of knowledge and job training as these people are responsible for the lives of beloved pets and valuable livestock. Some of this training and information vet techs and assistants are educated and trained on is to, “obtain and record patient case histories; collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures; provide specialized nursing care; prepare animals, instruments, and equipment for surgery; assist in diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures; expose and develop radiographs (x-rays); advise and educate animal owners; supervise and train practice personnel; and perform dental prophylaxis” (AVMA). These important daily tasks that fall in the responsibilities of a vet tech are what makes these employees professionals, just like the veterinarian themselves.
