For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners. As a veterinarian, making quick decisions could mean the difference between life and death for an animal. This is especially true during emergency operations when time may not be on your side. Consequently, this position requires a leader who can organize and direct others to work towards a common goal. Not only that, but that person must also have extensive knowledge of this field and immediately know the reaction an animal will have to a specific vaccine or the consequences that may arise during surgery. When owners take their pets to the clinic, they are understandably anxious about the results and outcome of the visit. While it’s the veterinarian's job to provide care for the animal, it’s also their job to put the owners at ease, reassuring them that their pet will indeed be fine. This communication is vital for building trust, as it lets the owner know what is happening to their animal and gives them confidence in believing that everything will be okay. Vets need a strong foundation in science. Have sufficient skills in mathematics to succeed in chemistry. Veterinarians also must be able to think in a logical manner, with reasoning the cause of an effect and vise versa. Compassion and a caring nature are personal attributes that can contribute to a veterinarian 's success, yet they also must be able to perform difficult tasks, such as euthanizing an animal to end it’s suffering. They must always strive to learn more and expand their knowledge base. However, in addition to having a very strong understanding of medicine and surgery, they must be compassionate, and a good listener. Deb also feels a good veterinarian must be able to separate their work and home life. The job can be emotionally very challenging and in order to avoid compassion fatigue and job dissatisfaction. This semester, I had the opportunity to interact with many different people in my field of interest. Of these people, one that stood out to me was a veterinary technician by the name of Marisa Kabbash. She was able to sit down with me and discuss her career of choice and her desire to be around animals in a clinical setting. In our interview, we talked about issues she has faced while working and how it affected her decision to continue her career as a vet-tech. To become a veterinarian you have to have several personal qualities. Veterinarians are held at the highest rank because you have to be an animal lover and pet owner. It is important to have high qualities when studying to become a veterinarian. As a child, I grew up going to work with my mother who is a registered veterinary technician. I observed many different medical situations in the veterinary field. I went to work with my mom many days throughout a span of ten years; eventually I acquired a job at the same clinic. Working in this clinic I gained experience with developing loyal clientele, being sociable, maintaining client and patient confidentiality, respecting privacy, and withholding large amounts of patience. I learned skills such as drawing blood, doing lab tests, including x-rays, administering fluids and medications, obtaining a patent history, scheduling appointments, placing catheters, surgical assisting, large and small animal birthing, maintaining a multi line phone
Hours are long and the work is high pressure. The job requires complex responsibilities and decision making. The needs of the animal and those of the owner do not always overlap perfectly, and decisions concerning treatment must be made to best balance the needs of both. In this way, veterinarians act as the gatekeepers of both human and animal welfare. My passion is to play an active role in improving the lives of both my animal patient’s and their human owners. In doing this I believe I will be able to fulfill my drive to help animals that was born out of the devastation I experienced in Japan.

At a young age, I fell in love with animals especially horses. As I got older, and started to look at future careers, I realized that I wanted to go into an animal science career. Because I want to make a difference in the world, I decided that I wanted to be a veterinarian. Animals need us and most of them depend on us. I want to help them in a way I know veterinarians can. My love for dogs started with my very first dog, Chelsea. From the moment I was born, she protected me like no other. Even my own grandfather was scared she was going to bite him when he tried to play with me. When she passed away I felt like I had lost my best friend. That’s why I hold a special place in my heart for not only dogs, but all animals. Veterinarians get the privilege to work with such kind creatures all day, everyday. Performing surgeries, working with the animals, interacting with the owners, and rescuing homeless or hurt animals are just a few of the things vets do. Although becoming a veterinarian will be a strenuous journey, the benefits are monumental in the end.
