Americans are defined by the respect they have for their country and its government, in taking advantage of their freedoms and rights that they gain by showing respect through allegiance, pride, and loyalty. Americans are a group of people living in the United States of America who will do everything in their power to prove their allegiance, and show the pride in which they have for their country and being an American. In the article Veterans Day: Never Forget Their Duty by John McCain, McCain talks about a friend of his who was a prisoner at war with McCain himself. McCain explains how his friend was beaten because the guards of the prison found his American Flag he had sewn to his shirt, so they beat him. Noda explained how her grandparents and parents were treated during and after Pearl Harbor, and how after all of that, they still showed their loyalty to the United States by not resisting the government. Noda asked her parents, “”Why did you go into those camps,” “Why didn’t you do anything to resist? Why didn’t you name the injustice it was?” Why were we so passive?” (citation). Noda’s grandparents and parents went into these camps to prove their loyalty to America, by not resisting they were showing that they were no threat, and had no reason to fight. Noda later talked about how she would be looked down upon by some people if she classifies herself as an American, all because she doesn’t look like the stereotypical American. Noda said “I can see myself today as a person historically defined by law and custom as being forever alien” (citation).
