US Navy: Positive Influence On People

In the beginning, I had absolutely no interest in joining the United States Navy. However, my interest was gauged and changed when I saw news reports of the United States’ government and its military branches, particularly the US Navy, giving humanitarian aid to the victims and refugees of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan and in the 2013 typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The way the Navy helped the affected people in these separate, but equally heartbreaking tragedies, by giving relief goods such as clean water, blankets, and medicine just to name a few made me realize that I want to do, and be part of, something in the future that makes a positive influence on people’s lives. These two moments have inspired in me the spirit of something that we Filipinos call bayanihan. It can be described as that feeling of deep compassion and concern for the well-being of others and by doing so, placing the lives of others before one’s self. First is the capability to fulfill all of their responsibilities and obligations to others and to themselves competently while also being capable to recognize not only when to lead, but also when to follow. Second, is the unyielding commitment to their organizations and to the people they are serving with. Last, but not the least, is having the ingenuity to be flexible and to be able to formulate different means of solving certain conflicts as the times demand it. These are just some of the traits that I believe constitute an exceptional leader and it is my motivation to have these qualities as I serve our country, the United States of America.
