There are many arguments about what will happen in the future of our world. Will there be flying cars and robots? Will it be a healthy, happy world or will it be a dark and gloomy world? In the societies of The Giver and The Truman Show, they are the “new and improved” utopias of someone else. Not everyone likes what the other person likes and in these societies the main characters have problems on their own trying to figure out what they should do. The Giver is about 12 year old boy named Jonas who lives in a strict environment and becomes the new Receiver of memory and faces the lies that has been hidden away from all the people. The Truman Show which is a movie that is about a 34-year-old man who has been watched from everybody ever since he was in his mother’s womb. Truman later realizes this and puts a stop to the whole show. Between The Giver and The Truman Show there are many similarities and differences that can be found.

Harry Truman During his presidential terms, Harry Truman showed resilience when faced with the many foreign affairs he faced. Events that would highlight Truman’s characteristics as an admirable leader include the hardships he faced during World War II, and his efforts for the containment of communism during the Cold War tensions. Truman fell into office after Franklin Delano Roosevelt passed away from a cerebral hemorrhage, he was sworn into office on April 12, 1845 therefore becoming the 33rd president of the United States. Within a month of Truman’s position in office, World War II in Europe had nearly concluded, within a month Hitler had committed suicide and Germany was throwing up the white flag, however the war in the Pacific with Japan had escalated.
Throughout history, people had made numerous futile attempts to create an Utopian society. The term "Utopia" depicts on an imaginary ideal state. Such a state is describe in The Giver. In The Giver, Jonas's community believes in the renunciation of personal properties, rights, one's unique characteristics and of binding personal relationships (such as marriage). This society is believed to be perfect, free of pain and sorrow; everything is under control and "same". This serene society greatly contradict with the one we live in. Our society is furnished with hatred and warfare, yet in return, we are given freedom and the privilege of having distinctive characters. Given the nature of human beings, our society is more idealistic to live in.
The Giver is about an anti-utopia society in which the main character, Jonas, realizes the he does not agree with his society’s rules and runs away with his little brother. This story expresses the need to be an individual and to break away from the confines of Jonas’ society. The Anthem is about a society that takes place in the future. In this collective society, the citizens have no individual freedoms. The main Character Equality 7-2521 rejects the collective beliefs around him and looks at himself as intelligent, good looks, strong person. He and his love The Golden One leave the confined society to explore and live as individuals.

A community just like that lives inside of Lois Lowry’s The Giver and this lack of individuality shows throughout the whole book. This theme is demonstrated through the control of individual appearance, behavior, and ideas.
A few kindred attributes between "The Giver" and "The Truman Show" are that both struggle with their feelings. For example, when Truman relishes Sylvia. Another one is both communities are visually examining Jonas and Truman. For example the engendering of "The Truman Show" could find where Truman was because of the cameras. In both The Truman Show and the Giver both of their communities are controlled. In The Truman Show, Truman's whole life is controlled by everyone around him. All of these choices are made for him and what everyone says is told to them. Jonas is life is also planned out for him, and all of these choices are as well. Both characters lives are controlled by a higher power but when they figure out about the higher powers control on them they try to break free. Even though one of them left for the truth in the other for a better life, they both leave for love.

Truman lives in a “perfect” worls also, and wants to escape too. Both doesn’t understand what is going on because there worlds control everything, but then the crushing truth comes out. The Actors in “The Truman Show” knew exactly what was going on, where to be, and where everything is, while in The Giver the people living in the community did not know that they were being controlled and that everything was the same. They thought that that was how everybody lives and didn’t think anything of it. “The Truman Show” has more action this way because you see them trying to cover up for Truman and trying not to let him know, while in The Giver only the directors know and they did a pretty good job making everything the same which can get pretty boring because nobody is trying to make a change or cover up until Jonas starts learning what everything really is. The similarities in the two novels are few despite of the similar concept the novels have. Both deal with utopias where everyone is happy. They both have individuals wanting to change the way society operates. Every individual in the novel is genetically engineered and conditioned to like what he or she has and be happy. Emotions and feelings aren’t supposed to exist in either utopia. Though the utopia in Brave New World is more technologically advanced than the one in The Giver, they are both more advanced than today’s technology.
