The Giver vs. The Anthem The Giver is about an anti-utopia society in which the main character, Jonas, realizes the he does not agree with his society’s rules and runs away with his little brother. This story expresses the need to be an individual and to break away from the confines of Jonas’ society. The Anthem is about a society that takes place in the future. In this collective society, the citizens have no individual freedoms. The main Character Equality 7-2521 rejects the collective beliefs around him and looks at himself as intelligent, good looks, strong person. He and his love The Golden One leave the confined society to explore and live as individuals. In each of the novels the plots are similar in the way that both of the main character is unique, try to change their civilizations, and leave in the end. The characters are similar they actions are the same. They take towards changing their public because Jonas ran away so that the visions would teach the people what life truly is. Many people seem to get entangled into society's customs. In the novel Anthem, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, lives a period of his life as a follower. However, Equality eventually, tries to distant himself from his society. He is shaped to be a follower, but eventually emerges in to an individual and a leader. On his journey, he discovers the past remains of his community. Ayn Rand uses Equality's discoveries of self to represent the importance of individuality in a functional society.

Anthem is a novella written by Ayn Rand, in which Equality 7-2521, the protagonist, struggles for self-identification living in a collectivist society. Equality believes that individuality is an eminent aspect of one’s life because individuality defines and outlines who man is. He endures all the hardships in his life living with people who support collectivism, and who reject his ideas. For example, when Equality 7-2521 invents and exhibits the light bulb, the World Council rejects it and tells him that it is selfish to work on something alone instead of working with his brothers. The World Council threatens to destroy the light bulb but Equality does not let that happen and rebels, so he is forced into exile from his society. Equality realizes that he is different from others because he cares about his happiness unlike others who are convinced to believe that a group’s happiness counts more than an individual’s happiness.
People in every Society are placed in categories according to gender, religion, race, and age from which one of these categories includes social class. In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, people are placed in social classes according to the government's liking and instead of race, age, gender etc their social class depends on the job they are given by the government. This was done to treat everyone equally in order to keep peace in the society. However, sometimes equality can cause rebellion and this idea is portrayed through the protagonist of the novel, Equality 7-2521. Ever since the unmentionable times had caused destruction to the society of Anthem, the government had taken away all the free will and individuality of its people.
Equality 7-2521 struggles in the Home of the Students because he is too intelligent and deft at absorbing information. The ability to think quickly and easily was looked down upon by the teachers and the government. Equality notes, “It was not that the learning was too hard for us. It was that that the learning was too easy. This is a great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick. It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them. The teachers told us so…” (21). The students are taught that being intelligent is evil and that they cannot be superior in knowledge than the officials in the government. Equality’s intelligence leads to his job as a Street Sweeper because the government wants to suppress radical ideas by assigning him to a socially lower job and authoritative status. As literary critic Tore Boeckmann states about Anthem, “[Equality] belong[s] at the pinnacle of any rational social hierarchy, yet [he is] thrown (at least temporarily) to the very bottom” (135). In this strictly collectivist society the word ‘I’ is replaced with the word ‘We’, and personal thought is considered a transgression. To liberate himself from his collectivist society and altruistic way of life, Equality must think only for himself, and become an egotist.
The Giver presents a community that appears to be perfect on the surface. Jonas's community is free of warfare, pain, sorrow and other bitterness we suffer in our society. The world seems to be secure and undergoes little conflict. Such a community seems flawless and is the idealistic society that we longed to live in. However, through Jonas's training, the imperfections of the Utopian community are revealed.

In Anthem everything is done for the good of society and the group, no one is an individual. While in “Harrison Bergeron” people have handicaps to make everyone mentally and physically equal. The main characters in each story, Equality 7-2521 and Harrison Bergeron, are both tall, athletic, tenacious and intelligent men, who are threats to the collective societies. Although “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and Anthem by Ayn Rand are both pieces of dystopian literature, their portrayal of family differs greatly.

Though the Council says the world is equal, it is in reality unbalanced and unfair because the Council makes all the decisions for the place. Similarly, both our society and the society in The Giver share similar ideas, but they are different in certain areas. For example, they both celebrate birthdays and have family units, but they have their own way of doing so. Based on the celebration of birthdays and the formation of family units, our society is better than the society in The Giver by Lois Lowry.

Therefore, readers could be able to see what is happening right now in the real society in which they live by reading her fiction.
