“Vengeance is in my heart, death in my hand, Blood and revenge are hammering in my head.” - Aaron from Titus Andronicus by William Shakespeare. The dominant theme of Hamlet is revenge. Just as Aaron from Titus Andronicus, many of the characters’ minds are consumed by thoughts of revenge. Three examples of this situation involve the characters Hamlet, Laertes, and Fortinbras. Each one of these young men approach the desire for revenge and choose a different path towards gaining it based on the guidance of others at some point in the play. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet finds out from his father’s ghost that Claudius was the one who killed him. First, before he sets out to do anything, Hamlet makes sure Claudius was actually the one who murdered his father. During Hamlet’s quest for vengeance on Claudius, he accidentally killed Laertes’ dad, Polonius. After that tragic, accidental death, Laertes promised his father would be revenged. To achieve his goal, Laertes partnered with Hamlet’s uncle, Claudius, and plotted to kill Hamlet during a duel with a poisoned sword. He knicked Hamlet’s upper arm during the battle, and a while later, Hamlet’s entire system had been filled with poisoned, and he died. However, that was not the only reason Laertes wanted revenge on Hamlet. Hamlet claimed that he loved Laertes’ sister, Ophelia, but Laertes knew he was only loving her for the sake of the country; “Carve for himself, for on his choice depends, The safety and health of this whole state.” Laertes’ sister died by drowning in a nearby river, and he blamed it all on Hamlet.
