Theme Of Evil In The Movie Avatar

In the film “Avatar” directed by James Cameron, wide shot, close up shots, gesture, lighting, sound, facial expression and dialogue are used to help the audience better understand the themes, good vs evil and respecting the environment which is expressed in the film.

Humans have come to Pandora (another planet) because Earth's resources have depleted and the Earth is dying. However, Pandora is inhabited by natives called the
Na’vi and they worship the deity Eywa, Eywa keeps the Ecosystem balanced. Avatar focuses around Jake Sully who has taken the place of his brother, in the Avatar program, which is lead by Scientist who explore Pangora by using a body of a hybrid of a Na’vi and Human as if it were his or her own, this helps them to carry …show more content…

The Colonel is drinking tea in the safety of his warship. While the Na’vi are struggling to survive the fire and explosions. A close up shot of the Colonel taking a sip of his tea, leaning back with a small grin on his face as he sees the devastation below. Cameron used a close up here to show the facial gesture of the Colonel and how he felt about destroying the Na’vi’s Home.Cameron relates this to the theme of good vs evil, reminding the audience the Colonel and humans are the evil side and reminding the audience to feel disgusted towards them. After Home Tree had fallen, it shows a wide shot of the humans back at base, they are together inside the safety of their base watching the destruction they caused from a projector. Some feel guilty and others are trying to rationalize. Cameron shows the viewer this by the facial expression of the humans most of them can’t stand to look so they look down or away. Others are staring at the screen and lost in thought as they rub their chin. Cameron wants the audience to see how cowardly the humans are. Also, we get the aspects of an extreme close up shot of Trudy's finger floating over the firing bottom and then the dialogue of her saying “I didn’t sign up for this shit” before she pulls the helicopter away from the destruction and heads back to base. This is before Home Tree had fallen. Trudy is piloting a Helicopter and about to start firing on the Na’vi. Both of these Aspects link into the motif that Jake Sully said at the beginning of the film. He said ‘eventually you have to wake up’. We see some of the humans at the base starting to wake up, we see this from their facial expressions and Trudy is also waking up, we can tell because of what she said. Waking up means they are realizing what the are doing how they are destroying the environment. These aspects both relate to the theme
