In the story Zebra, by Chaim Potok, Adam Martin Zebrin, or “Zebra”, forgot about a promise to his mother, which was to never run down that hill to fast that he couldn’t stop at the corner. He ran down a hill as fast as he could. He didn’t see the car, which crashed into him, making him never run well again, and also making his left arm, unable to move. One morning, a strange man, named Mr. John Wilson, was picking items from trash cans around the school. John came up to Zebra, and asked where the school office was. Zebra kindly pointed out where it was. After a while, John Wilson came back to Zebra, and asked him if he wanted to be included an art class for the summer. He didn’t know if he should go, because even if he went, he had to go to camp in August and also he couldn’t do anything with his left hand. Even so, John Wilson gave Zebra a thank you note, and drew him his face, with a crossed out Adam under it, and above the Adam, there was a zebra. Zebra helped John by telling where the principles office was, so that he could conduct an art class in the summer. As a thank you note, John Wilson drew Zebra’s face, and put the message, Adam, with thanks, John Wilson. He told John that people call him by the name Zebra, because of his last name. John Wilson asked for the paper back, crossed out Adam, and put a picture of a zebra over it. “He knew he was asleep. He knew it was the fever working upon his imagination. But if was so real. The little zebra running…”. This shows that his imagination was focused on the little zebra from the paper, running, even though it was not possible for that event to be happening.
