Recently, there has been a surplus of “diet fads” that have been very popular, with the Ketogenic Diet being one of them. Originally, the ketogenic diet is a spin off of the Atkins diet, by Dr. Atkins. Although many people are just now hearing of this supposed new diet, it has in fact been around for one hundred plus years. The Ketogenic diet approach provides one’s body to burn fat as fuel instead of carbohydrates without starving one’s body, and maintaining healthy physical and cognitive activity. Most are familiar with what the Ketogenic diet consists of; however, if ones are not, here is a brief run down of what I’m in reference to. What is a Ketogenic diet, might one ask? In fact, during World War II, an off-cited study was performed, examining the practicality of dried meat and fat as a light weight emergency ration for soldiers. This involved abruptly changing soldiers from standard carbohydrates-containing rations to pemmican (a mixture of dried meat and fat). Although the study only lasted for three days, the soldiers felt weak and were unable to complete their assignments. (Phinney 2) Ultimately, there is no doubt that ketogenic (very low-carbohydrate) diet promotes weight loss as there is strong supportive evidence about its effectiveness. It is also considered to be the most effective diet (even more than low-fat diet) for weight management and many studies support this. Although there is still a significant amount of research still being performed, there have been many successful research studies on the Ketogenic Diet and it’s many potential health benefits.
