In many countries the term municipal solid waste (MSW) has different means. Now here in the United States it is commonly known as trash or garbage but in the United Kingdom it would be called refuse or rubbish. It is a waste type consisting of everyday items that people use and then throw away. These things consist of grass clippings, furniture, clothing, batteries, newspapers, food scraps and many other things that are used in our homes, schools, hospitals and businesses (EPA, 2014). It was reported that in 2012 Americans generated almost 251 million tons of trash and only recycled and composted almost 87 million tons (EPA, 2014). Therefore, municipal solid waste is the things we throw away every day.

This landfill was redesign to help better the environment and the land around it. It was located in an arid, windy area with bad soil which made it very difficult to grow grass. They had a company come in and design a landfill closure system into renewable energy park. The results from this design provided environment protection and generated revenue. This design placed flexible solar panels directly on the surface of an expose geomembrane cap that tied the solar power into the existing landfill gas-to- energy system (“Tessman Road Landfill,” n.d.). Therefore, this solar energy power gives the landfill owners the power to create electricity, which could be sold to local power companies and/or used as energy for the site. This was a winning situation for the company because it not only provide renewable energy but it created a revenue stream as well as reduced maintenance requirements by totally eliminating the need to cut grass on a grass-covered landfill and it reduced the carbon dioxide emissions.
