Engineering is a professional career and thus much is expected out of them. Morals and values must be incorporated into the work of an engineer based on his/her own believes and those of the company. In today’s age, money speaks. Profit is a huge concern of companies even to the point where violations and infractions of the law are committed. Just to name a few immoral acts in engineering include: plagiarism, bribery, and whistleblowing. Whistleblowing can be either good or bad. It could save lives, but could also get one fired. Bribery, however, is a very deceptive act and can lead to actions being taken that otherwise would not have been. Bribery breaks many of the cannons in the NSPE Code of Ethics and thus should be taken seriously. This …show more content…

Court documents say that Thomas revealed that he used his power to make a deal with Iraqi contractors to take money in exchange for him to endorse that the Army Corps of Engineers support contracts and other requests for payment submitted by the contractors to the U.S. government. Supposedly, Thomas allowed for a $10,000 pay day from a worker who had helped in building a kindergarten and a girl’s only school in Baghdad. The worker also searched for Thomas’ support in having requests for payment approved by the Corps of Engineers. Deceiving or lying about something is not ethical. Thomas was secretly lying by committing an illegal act. He was being deceptive because he was supporting contracts that he was told to be in support of due to his good sum of money. This is not right. One should not be in favor of something that they know is wrong or that could get somebody hurt or killed. He was also lying to his company and to his self. He really did not care about the contracts that he was advocating for, rather, he just wanted them to be approved so that he would get even more money.
