August 6, 1945 was the bombing of Hiroshima, and Nagasaki was bombed a few days later on August 9, 1945 these bombings resulted in the unconditional surrender of Japan. The choice was made by President Truman as an alternative to the land based invasion of Japan. The bombings of the two cities killed 90,000 to about 146,000 people in Hiroshima and in Nagasaki 39,000 to about 80,000 people.

WWII was a war that needed to be fought. The United States entered WWII due to the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941. Four days later Germany declared war. They started doing this because they were getting increasingly worried about the Nazi’s advancement on bombs. Massive facilities were made for this secret project named the Manhattan Project. This connects to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki because US’s bombs were made from this project which two of them got dropped on two giant Japanese cities.

Operation downfall was a planned invasion of Japan that was suppose to take place at the end of war. This plan never came to fruition because president Truman opted to drop two atomic bombs on Japan instead, in order to save lives. It would of involved a massive amount of men material and time. It would of resulted in the complete devastation of Japan.

President Truman estimated that for the first 30 days of the invasion of Japan there would be around 31 thousand casualties for the US. 268 thousand casualties was estimated for the invasion in total. The Navy also estimated that the total losses to America would be 1.7 to 4 million with up to 800 thousand deaths. This plane dropped the bomb “Little boy” on Hiroshima which greatly devastated this city. This is one of the most famous airplanes because it dropped the first atomic bomb. No one has ever in the US has done that then, or since that bombing. The “Little boy” demolished 63% of Nagasaki, the amount of buildings destroyed from this bombing was about 76,000 buildings. Fun Fact: The aftermath of the bombing from the Enola Gay was a giant mushroom cloud that reached 40,000 feet in the sky, for about two hours the cloud stood in the sky shading the destroyed city and was seen from about 363 miles
