As technology advances, people become more and more attached to their phones and detached from real life. Now that people can text, call, tweet, and post from anywhere they are, that’s all some people seem to do. Many psychologists worry eventually addictions to our cell phones will have lasting effects on the way we communicate with each other face-to-face. Some worry we will become a society that never even talks face-to-face. There’s no doubt that we have become a society dependent on our cell phones and it’s killing our social skills, but this problem can be stopped before it goes too far. A person could try completely shutting their phone off for a day. They might be surprised by how much more in-touch they are with their friends, classes, and everyday life without the distraction of a cell phone. Twenty-four hours without a phone might sound insane, but it may be surprising how easy it is to survive without a phone for a day. Wallace suggests a less extreme version of this by saying that people could try decreasing the amount of time spent on their phone during dinner, by having everyone put their phones in the middle of the table while they eat (Wallace). This would be an easier task to complete than abandoning the phone for a whole day, but could still prove the point. Although putting the phone away during dinner is just a quick fix, it could improve day-to-day interaction. Another solution would be for parents to limit the amount of time children spend on their phones, or the types of phones they have. Some parents feel safer allowing their children to walk to school or go to friends’ house if they have a cell phone, but do these children need their cell phones to be able to access the internet? This would prevent the addiction from starting at a young
