In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, there are two main characters, Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. The story starts off with Rainsford and Rainsford’s hunting partner, Whitney, on a yacht heading to Rio de Janiero to hunt big game animals. Rainsford ends up becoming trapped on Ship-Trap Island, and that is where he and the reader are introduced to General Zaroff. Unfortunately for Rainsford, General Zaroff is not your normal General. General Zaroff and Rainsford are similar and different in many ways, and even though Rainsford believes that Zaroff is a sick individual, at the end of the story he becomes more like Zaroff than he realizes.

General Zaroff used hunting tactics when they were eating “the last supper” at Zaroff’s house. Every time Rainsford looked up, he said, “he found him studying him, appraising him narrowly” (Connell 66). By this, the reader can tell that Zaroff is trying to notice Rainsford’s tendencies. Knowing these can make hunting him easier. Also at dinner, Zaroff explains to Rainsford that “God made him a hunter” and how his father believed that “his hand was made for the trigger” since he was ten (Connell 85). Zaroff sharing this with Rainsford is proof that this man is a talented hunter and has been for a long time. Rainsford is quite the hunter himself. So much so, that Zaroff knew who he was when he arrived. The General stated, “It is a very great pleasure and honor to welcome Mr. Sanger Rainsford, the celebrated hunter, to my home” (Connell 52). Also during the hunt when Rainsford set up the Burmese tiger pit and claiming one of Zaroff’s dogs, Zaroff tells him, “You’ve done well, Rainsford” (Connell 194). General Zaroff is the better hunter because of the fact that there are no other animals that are challenging, hunting was becoming boring. “I was lying in my tent with a splitting headache one night when a terrible thought pushed its way into my mind. Hunting was beginning to bore me! And hunting, remember, had been my life.” Cause of this thought he needed an new animal that can reason and be a greater challenge. Rainsford can not relate because he has not hunted as much as General Zaroff and is much younger. Rainsford is shown to be intelligent in the story when he beats General Zaroff back to his house with only two options for beating him to his house. General Zaroff is shown to be crazy in the story when he traps people on his island and then hunt them. “No animal had a chance with me anymore”(. In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. Rainsford is a hunter. He was on a yacht until he fell off the boat. He swam all the way to shore because Rainsford heard three gun shots. He walked upon a gigantic mansion. This house was for a man named General Zaroff. He was an hunter just like Rainsford in a hunt , but hunted humans instead of animals. General Zaroff wanted to kill Rainsford in a hunt with the General. Also, the General threaten Rainsford if he doesn’t hunt with him; he will be sent with Ivan.
If one were to put another character in Rainsford’s position such as Whitney, it is likely that the story would not have ended the way it did. A main reason as to why Rainsford is the dynamic character he is, and can survive such a harsh game, is because he is very self-assured. While passing Ship-Trap Island, all the sailors, aside from Rainsford, are a little anxious because of rumors heard about the island. Rainsford believes that, “one superstitious sailor can taint the whole ships company with his fear,” (page 56). During a firm discussion with Whitney about hunting, Rainsford boldly argues how jaguars are just here to be hunted. Ironically, by the end of the story he thinks just the opposite. The first time he encounters General Zaroff, Rainsford earns the General’s trust instantly because he shows his independence and confidence to him. As he hears about the game, Rainsford does not express obvious fear toward General Zaroff. Being self-assured helps Rainsford to be the strong hunter he is.

I have read the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. In this story, Rainsford was thrown from his ship, and wound up on Ship-Trap island. There he meets General Zaroff. He is an unusual character who likes to hunt. His main game just so happens to be people. Rainsford is put against him and has to survive three days in the wild avoiding Zaroff. He uses his skills to try and beat him at his game.
General Zaroff is similar to Rainsford because he is also dangerous, but overall, General Zaroff is a lot different because he is evil, and skillful. Zaroff shows this is in the story when he hunted and murdered multiple people from all over the world. In the story it says, “Hunting? Good god, General Zaroff what you speak of is murder.”(Connell 49). This shows that Zaroff is a devious man that loved to kill for sport and personal amusement. However, Zaroff is different from Rainsford because he is the true definition of evil which is shown in the story when he stated that his quarry includes humans. An example of this is shown when he stated “the weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure... If I wish to hunt, why should I not?” (Connell 49). To sum it all up Zaroff has an abundance of confidence and self-pride in himself, which was his ultimate downfall. Also to show that Zaroff is very different from Rainsford, Zaroff is evil because of the fact that he has a lust for blood. In the text, this was shown when it says, “He need not to play that game if he doesn’t wish to. If he does not wish to hunt, I turn him over to Ivan” (Connell 51).
