Have you heard the phrases the hunter become the hunted? Or the last man standing? Why do people enjoy killing? In the most dangerous game all those phrases describe the story as a whole. The most dangerous game by Richard Connell is about a general name Zaroff, he’s a Russian Cossack. Zaroff has an addiction to hunting and expanding his quarry. But one man changes all of that for Zaroff as he finally meets his match. That one man name is Sanger Rainsford, who is an ex-military officer. Rainsford has traveled to many places and countries in the world and picked up some tricks along the way. General Zaroff is similar to Rainsford because he is also dangerous, but overall, General Zaroff is a lot different because he is evil, and skillful. Zaroff shows this is in the story when he hunted and murdered multiple people from all over the world. In the story it says, “Hunting? Good god, General Zaroff what you speak of is murder.”(Connell 49). This shows that Zaroff is a devious man that loved to kill for sport and personal amusement. However, Zaroff is different from Rainsford because he is the true definition of evil which is shown in the story when he stated that his quarry includes humans. An example of this is shown when he stated “the weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure... If I wish to hunt, why should I not?” (Connell 49). To sum it all up Zaroff has an abundance of confidence and self-pride in himself, which was his ultimate downfall. Also to show that Zaroff is very different from Rainsford, Zaroff is evil because of the fact that he has a lust for blood. In the text, this was shown when it says, “He need not to play that game if he doesn’t wish to. If he does not wish to hunt, I turn him over to Ivan” (Connell 51). So regardless of the choices that person will die, this is described as true dread.
