Book quotes "Different emotions battled for dominance in his mind and heart. Confusion. Curiosity. Panic. Fear. But lace through it all was the dark feeling of utter hopelessness." (6) This quote is significant to me as its shows straight up that Thomas is a character that is able to feel so many emotions and isn't afraid to admit what he is feeling. The idea of hopelessness all to common around the glade. They have been trying to escape for 2 years and have found nothing. "Something out there - it feels familiar" (35) This quote is important to the plot development as it gives the reader the idea that Thomas has been here before or knows something about this place. "She's the last one. Ever." (56) When Teresa entered the maze it was exciting for the Gladers but also very weird as she was the only girl to ever come up in the maze. It also shocked the Gladers ad Thomas had only just arrived a few days before, they are only supposed to get a new person every month. It was a major development in the plot when they found a note in her hand that read she's the last one. Ever. As that meant that they were supposed to do something or supposed to have found a solution. "Don't do it, Tommy. Don't you bloody do it." + "Thomas knew he had no choice. He moved. Forward. He squeezed past the connecting rods at the last second and stepped into the maze" (110) Alby and Minho entered the maze that morning to go inspect a 'dead' griever. When they hadn't made it back before sundown the Gladers started to get worried. The walls started to close and then they appeared. They were not going to make it back in time. Thomas knew he had to do it. He knew he had to enter the maze. So he did. It showed such courage entering the maze at night to save them. They have a new theory to work on and it give them hope that maybe this time they will find a way to beat the maze. "Float Catch Bleed Death Stiff Push That was it. Six words." (284) "The subjects will be allowed one full nights sleep before stage 2 implementation" (371) This quote is at the very end of the book and is a real cliffhanger. The book come to a close and readers think that it will end happy enough with the escape of many Gladers. We leave the book knowing that they are now going to be put into stage 2.
