The Maze Runner has a futuristic setting. It takes place in the Glade, which is surrounded by the Maze. The Glade is a vast courtyard that is the size of several football fields. It is surrounded by four walls that are hundreds of feet high. These are the walls of the Maze. Within the Glade, the children each have jobs and responsibilities. There are established leaders and rules for the Gladers to follow. Along with rules, there are punishments for breaking the rules. They have made their own small community where they establish order. Inside the Glade they feel safe, but the Maze is greatly feared by the Gladers. The doors to the Maze open and close every day. The walls inside the Maze move every day making it almost impossible

People do not have to fly to be hero, it takes much more. Many heroes of today are shown to have supernatural powers that makes them acquire amazing abilities, flying, super strength, skills to manifest anything, the list goes on. Our heroes in the present time are perceived by the audiences' mindset to have special powers but there are times where being a hero does not need to have all the extra tricks. Thomas, a character in The Maze Runner is thrown unconsciously with no memory into a place of the unknown called the Glades, consisting of only teenagers inhabiting the area. He would soon find out the whole place is bordered by a big wall that closes by night and day to protect them from the maze that are filled with demonic machines that will kill on sight. This begins his adventure, eager to learn what is out there and willing to become a maze runner which is equivalent to being a tribute for the greater good in their little homemade society. Having powers might help to become a hero, but in the dystopian novel The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, his protagonist Thomas demonstrates the hero journey in a more natural way by crossing the threshold, meeting a mentor, and lastly having tests, allies and enemies.
In the Maze Runner, civilization vs savagery is a recurring and constant theme. The Gladers continuously strive for order and justice yet they still resort to extreme measures in their rules and laws. Here lies the border of civilization and savagery. An example of this is when the Gladers vote to banish Ben out of the Glade. Although they feel that justice needs to be shown and he deserves to be punished, banishing Ben to the maze seems like an extreme act. This act brings about intense feelings of guilt in some of the characters, yet they are reminded that the Glade is governed by a savage rule of law. It might not be morally correct or humane, but it reflects the manner in which the boys try to keep the Glade in order, by any means necessary for civilization within the community. The Gladers keep civilization as the prevailing system in their world.
Doomsday. Armageddon. 2012. The end of the world or the apocalypse is known by its many names and has become an extremely viral subject for this generation. But, imagine living in a world not playfully joking around about the apocalypse, but strategically trying to survive it. This is the harsh reality for Thomas, a teenager living in a virus polluted and self-destructing planet. A deadly disease has broken out called “the flare” which causes the most sane and rational people to become raging and hysterical flesh eaters. Not only has the virus taken the lives of millions, but the extreme climates have also killed the few remaining. In the novels The Maze Runner and The Scorch Trials, Thomas and his friends will have to fight to survive a world taken over by the sick and protect one other from those who say they want to help. The two novels share a touching story of young lives entwined during a difficult time and the lengths the characters go through in order to survive the apocalypse. The ultimate question within these novels is what is one willing to risk in order to survive? Within the novels The Death Cure and The Scorch Trials, Thomas is forced to fight for his survival on a daily basis, and in doing so he is constantly faced with either having to betray those closest to him, or remain the honest and true man he is, in order to survive. Within these novels, relationships are tested to such extremes that the repercussions of each survival based decision the characters make have the possibility of endangering the lives of those closest to them, but ultimately is a test to see who remains true to themselves and does not sell out their friends or themselves.
The book I chose to write a synthesis essay comparing my life to is The Maze Runner by James Dashner. The book is about a boy named Thomas who wakes up in a place called the Glade which he has never seen before, and is surrounded by new places, people, and events that he is completely unfamiliar with. Thomas doesn’t remember much about before he woke up there, and at first he feels alone and uncomfortable with his new surroundings. This approach of being introduced into something you are completely unfamiliar with is a common feeling in the life of a teenager, and with current day technology it is becoming more and more difficult to adapt to new surroundings and become introduced to new places and people. Because of my personal experience in moving around often and being placed in a similar situation I have chosen to write on this particular subject relating to both the book and my life.
In The Maze Runner, Thomas and a bunch of other guys from the glade are stuck in a giant maze with no way out. Thomas is the main character and this is how he follows the hero’s journey and becomes a hero. Reasons are Call to adventure, Ordeal, Death\, and rebirth, Crossing the threshold.
The imagined world created in Looper gives free play to the imagination. The futuristic composition of this made up world gives the feeling that the normal balance of nature can be altered, with time travel, telekinetic abilities given to people, and highly advanced technology. The narrative structure of this film makes the main character, Joe, the protagonist. His objective in this movie is to do his job by killing whoever is sent back to him from the future.
Literacy is very important to me, it is essential to everyone, everywhere, and helps those who are intellectually curious about any subject. Personally, I have never had a bad connection with reading or writing. Both tools have taught me about myself and helped me realize I can find a lot of things out by reading a book. From learning how to sound out letters to completing a reading and writing summer assignment on The Mismeasure of Man, I developed a good foundation for reading and writing.

And if there's no conflict, there are no stories worth telling - or reading!” (Veronica Roth). Roth is stating that utopian and dystopian literature is based on discussing conflict from the story, so it is necessary for there to be conflict worth talking about in the story. This rule of telling a story worth reading has stayed true throughout our history, so when H.G. Wells tells a story, it is reasonable to assume he intends to tell a story worth reading that includes conflict. In The Time Machine, Wells presents a far future society where most of our modern-day problems have been solved,

Couples must apply with the state to court and marry, a lottery system determines child bearing, speaking of the outside world is utterly prohibited, and systems of social hierarchy are well in play. Television screens of the toxic landscape contribute to psychological well-being; though over time, the sensors become hazy due to the elements.
The Maze Runner is a 2014 mystery/science fiction film that can be viewed from an archetypal perspective. An archetype can be described as a pattern that can and is copied and recurring symbols or characters. The concept of archetypes came from Carl Jung a psychiatrist who believed that all cultures use archetypes to build stories without communicating to each other about them. Two groups of archetypes are the character and symbolic archetypes. The film The Maze Runner should be analyzed through an archetypal perspective because it has character and symbolic archetypes.
The novel The Maze Runner by James Dashner begins with a teenage boy waking up in an elevator who has no memory of the past, only that his name is Thomas. When the doors of the elevator open up he is pulled into a humongous square surrounding, called the Glade, by a group of teenage boys. The boys in the Glade refer to themselves as the ‘Gladers’. Thomas learns that the Gladers have lived in there for two years and that the Glade is located in the center of a maze which contains a labyrinth of high walls that move during the night and deadly creatures called grievers. The Glade is led by two boys, Alby and Newt; they both maintain order in the Glade by enforcing strict rules and jobs that keep the Gladers busy. A day after Thomas’ arrival an unknown girl arrives in the Glade. This shocks everyone because the Gladers only receive a new person every month, never within the same week. This also shocks everyone because she was the only girl in a maze full of boys. The girl also gives a message that everything is going to change and that she is the last one ever. Right after her message she immediately falls into a coma. The arrival of the girl causes many things to go chaotic including the sun seizing to rise, the Gladers stop receiving supplies from the creators of the maze, and the doors of the Glade that protect the Gladers from the grievers at night stop closing. When the girl, Teresa wakes up she informs Thomas that they both knew each other in the past and that the maze was a code. Thomas and the people who run around the maze to map out the labyrinth, the runners, look through the archives of the maps and find out the code.
