Shape is a visually perceived area created either by an enclosing line or by color or value changes defining the outer edge. Shape and form are terms that are generally synonymous, although, shape is more precise in description, while form has a broader meaning in art and design (Lauer & Pentak, 2012, p. 152). A designer can effectively apply shape to digital illustrations in various ways. Shape can be used as the focal point or defining form in the message for a design or illustration. In this example, the designer used shape and color in conjunction with negative and positive space to effectively produce a unified logo design. The ink droplet shapes help define the octopus form in the negative space. These element in turn complement one another in both the company objective (printing) and actual octopus behavior (producing ink), as well as the difference in colors create emphasis and interest, thus producing a cohesive, …show more content…

In this example, the designer applies a textured background along with rectangle shapes in a “blocking” technique to ensure the necessary information is easier for the viewer to read. Incorporating texture into the background of this design adds depth and interest to the composition. Although I do not like this flier in particular, and do not feel it is a good design, the method of using shapes to break up the background texture is effective in conveying the needed information.
These two methods of applying shape to a design or illustration are regularly used by national and/or global companies down to small or local businesses and can be found in advertisements, web pages and sites, packaging, fliers and logos. A lot of times these techniques often go unnoticed (until you look for them), consequently demonstrating their effectiveness.
