Self-esteem began once David Hume noticed self-esteem was a problem in people's lives because it made them feel bad about themselves and did not consider themselves valuable. Self-esteem causes individuals to travel through depression, do drugs, and become suicidal. Self-esteem starts at a young age, children and youths begin to value themselves less and compare themselves to others. this may result in failure in academic success and can have an effect on people's future. Having a high self-esteem will make you confident. Being confident will get you to achieve more in life and you won’t hesitate about others opinions. “There has been a dramatic rise in the number of students who describe themselves as being "above average" for academic ability, drive to achieve, mathematical ability and self-confidence.” (Does confidence really breed success). As this quote describes students who don't have confidence won't be able to achieve as those that have high self-esteem. People who have a high self-esteem, have strong confidence about themselves and won't get pressured by others. On the other hand, low self-esteem will result in bad confidence and lead you to failure and might make it harder for you to achieve your goals. According to Nicholas Elmer, “his research showed that low self-esteem was involved in some problems such as suicide, teenage pregnancy, and eating disorders, though he also stressed low self-esteem was only one risk factor among many.” (A short history of self-esteem). Self-esteem wasn't noticed until the 1890s when a psychologist, William James, who started the term “self-esteem”. William James had a very simple definition of self-esteem “the more success we have and the lower our expectations or pretensions then the higher our self-esteem”. This quote explains if our expectations weren't high and if we were all more successful our self-esteem will get higher. This will allow you to be happier in your life and you won't judge anyone based on high expectations. Lowering our expectations will allow everyone to “feel good” and “live better”. The less we think of something that might happen the higher our self-esteem will get. This affects everyone who always thinks of what the cause will be from the action they did and this lowers our self-esteem causing us to keep thinking less of ourselves. William James work has been ignored for 75 years due to many wars such as world wars and economic depression. This did not allow people to live happy lives and this did not allow people to worry about self-esteem. The world rather was worried about shelter, food, and safety. These are one of the first factors people worried about before self-esteem. The optimistic Child Professor Martin Seligman believed that in the 1960s this all changed.
