Making cinnamon rolls was supposed to be easy, but looking at the dough, I knew I was mistaken. Something had gone disastrously wrong, it was sticky, too sticky. The dough was sticking to the counter despite it having been sprinkled with flour. It was on the rolling pin and all over my hands. I gave it handful after handful of flour, yet it seemed only to make it worse. I picked it up and tossed it back down over and over and continued to try to knead the dough into submission, to no avail. I grew even more frustrated at myself and the dough; this was supposed to be easy. I have made all different types of bread: bagels, challah, ciabatta, raspberry sweet rolls, cranberry nut swirl bread, and more; why was this not working? I took a step back, giving it a skeptical look. I brought the dough up and slammed it on the counter repeatedly, kneading it vigorously in between. I looked at my hands and they were covered in the sticky mess. I looked at my pans. They were ready to go, laid out and greased. I looked at the rolling pin, covered in dough from my attempt to roll the dough out. I finally looked back upon all my previous bakes, and I thought to myself, I am not ready to give up. Cinnamon rolls may have not been the possibility, but perhaps something completely new was in order. Taking a small chunk of dough, I shaped it into a ball and pushed my finger into the center, as if making a thumbprint cookie. Next, I took a spoonful of the cinnamon-sugar mixture. I put it into the depression and placed it into the pan. I repeated it over and over, feeling better the more I made. The sticky mess had turned out to become what I now call cinnamon bombs.
