Recommended: Significance of symbolism in literature

In the story of “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood the narrator sleeps in what use to be a high school gym with other women, they are not allowed to speak and are only allowed outside twice a day for walks.They have 2 guards named Aunt Elizabeth and Sara who are important to the story because they make sure the women never speak or rise up. In chapter 2, the room the narrator is in has absolutely nothing that can be used as a weapon which shows how regulated this place is, she must use an all red outfit that covers her from head to toe. She’s supposed to go grocery shopping so Rita, who is a martha and the cook in the kitchen gives her tokens which is the currency used in Gilead to buy food. Rita never speaks to her because she is a “Martha” …show more content…

She saw a pregnant lady who is named Ofwarren whose real name use to be Janine. Everyone in the supermarket admires her for being pregnant. Some Japanese tourists want to take a picture of her and ask if she is happy, she refuses to take the picture and tells them that she is indeed happy. In chapter 6, they take the long way home so that they can admire as much as they can of the natural world before being caged again. They also end up passing “The Wall” which prevents them from running away and on the wall where 6 dead bodies of doctors that were killed for doing abortions. In Chapter 7, in bed the narrator thinks about hanging out with her best friend Moira and porn burning magazines at a park while on a walk with her mom. Then her memory goes blank and all she remembers past those memories is being taken against her will and being told she’s not suitable, she wishes she could write but keeps the story in her head because writing is too dangerous. In Chapter 8, they see the bodies of a priest and two gender treachery practitioners on the wall so they head on home and bump into some econ wives who are conducting a funeral for a few month old

    Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale deals with how women are forced to accept roles based on extreme biblical laws distorted by a male dominated society; yet, there are women who willing participate in the reinforcement of these sexist and misogynistic values that subdue women. Gilead's government controls and shapes women's identities through oppression, however, indoctrinates women into believing that the roles stripping them of their independence are designed to protect and support them in fulfilling their biological purpose; fear of the Colonies and the Salvaging has intimidated women into becoming passive in order to survive, and forces them to report anyone failing to comply to the imposed hierarchical society. The new regime claims that it has given women more freedom than it has taken away, and since women are better protected they can become mothers without the fear of rape or being degraded by men or society; women are viewed as “functionaries” that must remain invisible by having matching uniforms, new names, and forgetting past identities in exchange for new ones consistent with the morals of Gilead (261). Handmaids fulfil no other purpose than to bear children, while barren wives must provide companionship for their husbands, perform domestic duties, and raise the children; every women’s body becomes a replaceable object controlled by Gilead, and all liberties and individuality are taken away, yet the Aunts justify and appear to encourage the subjugation of women.
