In the Giver, Jonas is faced with many new and unusual experiences. The first of his experiences starts during the Ceremony of Twelve, when the chief elder is giving all the new Twelves their assignments, they skip over Jonas. At the end of the ceremony it is revealed that Jonas had not been assigned, but instead he was “chosen.” On his first day Jonas meets the Giver, and recieves his first memory. As weeks go by the Giver and Jonas get to know each other, one day Jonas asks the Giver about the previous receiver-in-training. The Giver tells Jonas that she had applied for a release, then the Giver shows Jonas what a release truly is.

A few days later, Jonas’s father brings home a baby boy named Gabriel (Gabe). While everyone was fawning over Gabe, Lily (Jonas’s little sister) points out, “ “. This makes Jonas feel self-conscious, because only a handful of citizens have light eyes. After a few days the Ceremony of Twelve come around and the chief elder is assigning jobs to all the new Twelve. The chief elder calls the person to the left of Jonas, then the person to the right of Jonas. As he realises that he had been skipped, then he begins to wonder about all the things that he did wrong. Then as the last assignment had been given out, the chief elder apologize to Jonas and the audience. She said that Jonas had not been assigned, instead he had been “Chosen.” She had called Jonas to the stage to present him with his job, she said that he had been chosen to be the next “Receiver-in-Training.” She listed the attributes that are required to be the Receiver, and when she got to the last one she was unsure if he had it. The chief elder asked Jonas if he had the ability to see beyond, Jonas was so nervous about all of this that he wanted to say that he didn’t have this ability. As stated in the book (pg.
