As Jonas reached the top of the hill, the chill seemed to grow from his bones. Jonas and Gabe climbed onto the red sled from the memory. He clutched Gabe closer as the sled gained speed and the trees flew by. A few feet from the base of the snowy hill, the sled broke on impact with a rock. Jonas staggered out of the snow, trying to rub warmth into the newchild, who had begun to shiver violently.
He collapsed at the base of the house, the one with lights, music and grandparents. A young girl swung open the door and ushered the two inside.
Jonas lay in blankets, sipping at a warm brown drink when his body was warm enough to speak.
“ You had the memories, you knew the sled would be there because we gave the memory. My family- we gave the memories of happiness, music, Christmas- the festival with a tree, lights and gifts and all of the others to the first Giver. You knew it would be there because of your ability to see beyond” the girl paused, breathless. “ You're instinct knew the truth. All instincts do.Yours wanted to find Elsewhere.
“ Please” he croaked. “ I need to know. Have I reached? Have I

The girl looked at him in sorrow.
“ Oh Jonas, you must know bye now. How the others went to Elsewhere”
Realization struck Jonas. He opened his to mouth to try and say something, but words failed him. The girl nodded.
“ Yes Jonas, to truly reach Elsewhere, you must embrace what took the rest there” she gulped.
Jonas collapsed. As the girl rushed over, he told her
“ Take care of Gabe”
“ I will”
The newchild climbed up to Jonas, and grabbed his ears with his chubby hands. The girl picked him up and Gabe squealed and began to play with her hair. What determines a society to be either a utopia or a dystopia? Would it be everyone following the rules? In the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry, a new “Utopian” culture blossoms from the previously failed society. The Giver’s nation starts out with the intention of creating a utopian society; however, the strict limitations turn it into a dystopia where there are receivers, like Jonas, that hold the good and bad memories from the past culture. Jonas will experience great pain and great joy through his job as the Receiver instead of the whole community sharing the burden. The Giver’s world is a dystopia because of the following three reasons: they kill people that disobey the rules, they do not get to pick their own jobs, and, above all, they beat children if they do not use precise language.
In The Giver, a narrative by Lois Lowry, Jonas’s father illustrates his feelings during his Ceremony of Twelve and Jonas tells about his own feelings concerning the forthcoming event. In the text it states, “‘But to be honest, Jonas,’ his father said, ‘for me there was not the element of suspense that there is with your ceremony. Because I was already fairly certain of what my Assignment was to be,’”(Lowry, paragraph 3). This segment of text elucidates the reason of Jonas’s father’s lack of surprise of his Assignment. As stated above, Jonas’s father was already certain of his Assignment, which he continues to explain to be a Nurturer. Jonas decides to leave and change the lives of his people so that they can experience the truth. “The Giver rubbed Jonas’s hunched shoulders… We’ll make a plan” (155). Their plan involves leaving sameness and heading to Elsewhere, where Jonas knows the memories can be released to the people. He has a connection with Gabe, a special child who has experienced the memories, unlike the rest of the community. Jonas has a strong love for Gabe, and he longs to give him a better life. “We’re almost there, Gabriel” (178). The Giver: Analysis of Jonas On the surface, Jonas is like any other eleven-year-old boy living in his community. He seems more intelligent and perceptive than many of his peers, and he thinks more seriously than they do about life, worrying about his own future as well as his friend Asher’s. He enjoys learning and experiencing new things: he chooses to volunteer at a variety of different centers rather than focusing on one, because he enjoys the freedom of choice that volunteer hours provide. He also enjoys learning about and connecting with other people, and he craves more warmth and human contact than his society permits or encourages. The things that really set him apart from his peers—his unusual eyes, his ability to see things change in a way that he cannot explain—trouble him, but he does not let them bother him too much, since the community’s emphasis on politeness makes it easy for Jonas to conceal or ignore these little differences.
Even as a child Jonas was unusually perceptive, this is characterized through his pale eyes which appear deeper than the other children’s dark eyes. While he gets along well with his peers he still feels different. Jonas has a heightened sense of people and who they are, the reasoning for things, and curiosity of new things. He particularly enjoys the freedom to make his own choices as to where he will serve his volunteer hours. Jonas never volunteered at one place more than another, which made it hard for him to predict what job he will be assigned. He liked being able to experience all sorts of positions in the community. Jonas is set apart in many ways, one is particular is his ability to see beyond. The closer the ceremony of twelve gets, the more often he see sees flashes of items changing for a second, flashes of the beyond (Lowry 94).
Throughout quarters 3 and 4 we have touched on many of the essential questions that we have learned about throughout the year, but I feel we have touched mostly on how do experiences help define who we are and who we will become and how can choices impact an outcome. So with those two questions I had came up with a thesis statement to sum up those questions with things that had happened in real life and what we have learned during third and fourth quarter. My thesis statement is, Our actions define who we are and who we will become in life.
Jonas said “I gave him memories along the way to let him survive, but he’s cold.” The giver had started to give Jonas and Gabe memories to keep them warm and alive. Jonas felt the memory of him sitting next to a campfire and it was as hot as a hot bathing room in the house of the old. Jonas had remembered about his friends Fiona and Asher and asked the giver. “Where is Fiona and Asher.”
At the end he can't tell his friends why they not to play the game their playing called war because he can't tell his friends it's in his rules. After that he asked The Giver what is release so he shows Jonas and he is horrified from his experience of seeing his dad murdering a new born! Now he is horrified of his dad ande used to be not horrified of his dad. Now scince the begining he was dumb and normal now he is wiser, smarter,stronger,better,braver,and couragous. And now his dad which he is horrified of put a release for Gabe and he tod Jonas " I voted for Gabriel's release when we had a meeting this afternoon" and Jonas had put his fork down and told his father" Release?" Then he was really mad so he took the little one Gabriel and started his journey to escape he had to ride on teh side of the river then he had been oaettling for hours and finally left the community. In The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the reader is left with an uncertain ending about what happens to the main character of the story, Jonas, and his little friend, Gabriel. The plot of a story usually ends with a resolution, where the conflict of the story is resolved; however, this is clearly not the case with The Giver. It is not possible to be completely certain on the ending of this book by reading this story alone; however, it is possible to gather the evidence and assume what likely occurred in the ending of The Giver. One cannot be sure on what happened at the ending of The Giver; however, I believe that Jonas and Gabriel did not survive. I also believe that there could have been a more effective ending to the story; I highly disagree with Lois Lowry’s choice of leaving it up to the reader to decide what happens in the ending of the story, for it leaves too many unanswered questions. Overall, I did not enjoy the ending of The Giver due to its ambiguity.
As I inched my way toward the cliff, my legs were shaking uncontrollably. Imagine a place where there is no color, no choice, a place where individuality and freedom has been traded for sameness and security. Lowry has created such a place in the novel The Giver. This place, or rather community, is presumed to be in the future and is supposed to be a utopia where everyone conforms to the rules. He learns that it is a job of the highest honor, one that requires him to bear physical pain of a magnitude beyond anyone’s experience.
