The Giver Compare and Contrast Essay by Brody “The worst part of holding the memories is not the pain. It's the loneliness of it.” Holding memories is just one of the many differences between our societies because though The Giver’s society is similar to our modern-day society, there are many big differences between them. The Giver is very different to our modern day society. First, in The Giver you get assigned jobs, unlike us where you can choose. Second, you get assigned a family unit where you are forced to have one girl and one boy that someone makes for you. Also, in The Giver you can only see in black and white to make it fair. Though they both seem like opposite societies there is some similarities between them. There are many similarities
The Giver was an example of a dystopian society. In this community citizen doesn`t had any freedom. It had a lots of information about why it was dystopian, but today I will talk about few thing. First reason was the natural world was banished and distrusted. Second was information, independent thought, and freedom were restricted. The last was they had fear of the out side world.
What determines a society to be either a utopia or a dystopia? Would it be everyone following the rules? In the book The Giver, by Lois Lowry, a new “Utopian” culture blossoms from the previously failed society. The Giver’s nation starts out with the intention of creating a utopian society; however, the strict limitations turn it into a dystopia where there are receivers, like Jonas, that hold the good and bad memories from the past culture. Jonas will experience great pain and great joy through his job as the Receiver instead of the whole community sharing the burden. The Giver’s world is a dystopia because of the following three reasons: they kill people that disobey the rules, they do not get to pick their own jobs, and, above all, they beat children if they do not use precise language.
While many may not observe the similarities or differences in Brave New World and The Giver, they are quite obvious. While one society is repulsed at the past, the other simply erases it from memory and it is never spoken of. Neither society believes in love or family, but there are subtle differences in their beliefs. While The Giver has no definite caste system, they have certain procedures for levels of society. John and Jonas are similar characters who are confronted with inner turmoil and find their own way out. Brave New World and The Giver are wonderful works of art that are extremely close in storylines. Whether one believes that they are similar or different, it must be said that the resemblances are almost scary.

The novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry, is an everlasting story that shows the importance of individuality. This novel is about a young boy named Jonas who was elected as the Receiver of Memories, a person who is given the memories from the world that existed before their current society, Sameness. In this society there is no individualism. People can not choose who to marry, or what they want to do for a living. Over time Jonas becomes more and more wise, and realizes that the supposedly perfect community actually has some very dark and negative aspects. The author, Lois Lowry is a 76-year-old writer who focuses her writing on helping struggling teenagers become individuals. Lowry had a very tragic childhood. After both of her parents were separated and killed in the middle of a war, she was devastated and the only way she was able to block and forget all of the horrifying things that were happening, were books (Lowry). “My books have varied in content… Yet it seems… that all of them deal with the same general theme: the importance of human connections,” Lowry explained in her autobiography. In the novel The Giver, Lois Lowry uses the literary elements symbolism, foreshadowing, and imagery to express the theme: importance of an individual.
However, on a deeper level, we all have a Giver of sorts in our lives, and that we all have people who pass on memories and stories of what life was like before us. She said that her mother was her “Giver” and she was the “Receiver” during her mother’s last days. She would sit with her mother and all her mother wanted to do was tell her stories of her life.
In The Giver, their community was created to make everyone and everything the same. Things such as color, music, memory of the history of the world, and feelings were taken away from the people living in the community. The community in The Giver tried to protect the people from making wrong choices by taking away choices. The citizens in the community did the have the freedom to choose where they wanted to do their volunteer hours. Their version of a perfect society and culture are very different to communities and cities like Chicago, IL and the Amish lifestyle,. There are many pro’s and con’s to each community that separate their differences.
The Actors in “The Truman Show” knew exactly what was going on, where to be, and where everything is, while in The Giver the people living in the community did not know that they were being controlled and that everything was the same. They thought that that was how everybody lives and didn’t think anything of it. “The Truman Show” has more action this way because you see them trying to cover up for Truman and trying not to let him know, while in The Giver only the directors know and they did a pretty good job making everything the same which can get pretty boring because nobody is trying to make a change or cover up until Jonas starts learning what everything really is. Everyone lived in complete Sameness, and never learned what it meant to be an individual. By eliminating as much self expression as possible in Sameness and society, Jonas's community has rejected the individuality of a society where people are free to move society forward. In The Giver individuality is represented by colors, memories, and pale eyes.
There are many differences and similarities. The book The Giver and the movie The Truman Show are somewhat alike and somewhat different. Both characters have complicated, yet “perfect” lifestyles. To begin with, in The Truman Show, Truman wanted to go somewhere else.
The similarities in the two novels are few despite of the similar concept the novels have. Both deal with utopias where everyone is happy. They both have individuals wanting to change the way society operates. Every individual in the novel is genetically engineered and conditioned to like what he or she has and be happy. Emotions and feelings aren’t supposed to exist in either utopia. Though the utopia in Brave New World is more technologically advanced than the one in The Giver, they are both more advanced than today’s technology.
The book The Giver is a dystopian book because you don’t get to make any of your own decisions. You would never know the truth about release. You would never experience life how you should experience it. The world may seem perfect from someone’s view inside the community, but from the outside it is harsh and horrible. Their world could be turned into a utopia eventually, but as of right know it is a
Experts are people who have learned to reflect on their own thoughts while reading. They can read something and simultaneously think about aspects of their life than are relatable. Being able to do this makes life and thinking less cluttered and clearer. I struggle with this. Unless the reading is something I care deeply about. I find myself thinking solely about the content and what I’m expected to take from it. I don’t want to spend unnecessary time reflecting on what I read. I want to get the assignment done and move on.
