The first principle of interpersonal communication listed in the book is that it is unavoidable. This means no matter what you do, you are always communicating interpersonally, a few example can explain. So one might say that if you don’t speak you won’t be able to communicate on an interpersonal level. Since, they are something that is made of matter they have no choice, but to realize that their body language can be communicating something to someone else. Now, what is communicated may be what the sender intended to be announced, but like the principle states: it is “unavoidable”. The five ethical systems of communication are as follows: categorical imperative, utilitarianism, the golden mean, ethic of care, and significant choice. First the categorical imperative refers to an ethic system that believes in absolute truths. There is no gray areas, no deviation of ethic codes, and everything is black and white. So a scenario where a culture follows this ethic system would be our judicial system. There is no room for changing the severity of a punishment for a crime or what the definition is of that crime. Now if there is a change, it has to go up to the Supreme Court. If the law is not in question then most legal officials see the law as plain and simple. Utilitarianism refers to making decisions for the greater good. This happens all the time in the medical field. Certain medicines/vaccines can cause extreme side effects and sometimes possible death in certain individuals. Now since most of the medicine/vaccines only effect a small percentage of people in that way, the FDA will allow these products to enter the consumer
Let’s say that a satellite is scanning the vast open cosmos and found an asteroid that was on a direct path to collide with earth. Now this asteroid was the size of Montana and would bring the utter destruction of the human race. If you were the owner of this satellite and you were following the significant choice imperative, you would scream it out to the public. It might not be the best decision because it could cause mass hysteria and collapse governments overnight. That would not be the owner’s problem though? 3. The five things that influence perception are, culture, sex and gender, physical factor, technology, and our sense of self. Culture affects your own perception tremendously. You are raised on certain beliefs, rules, and structures that maybe nonexistent in other cultures. When you approach situations in life and try to find meaning you will use your cultured thinking to perceive what the situation is about. The Sex and gender influence can be derived from gender role socialization and gender schema. Gender role socialization is the process by which women and men learn the gender roles appropriate to their sex. Gender schema is a mental framework we use to process and categorize beliefs, ideas, and events as either masculine or feminine in order to understand and organize our world.
