The season of spring officially began on March 20th of this year, and it will end on June 20th. Whether you’re doing some spring cleaning and need a good soundtrack, or lamenting over the hardships and relationships of this past winter, here are ten songs about spring that will put some pep in your step while also forcing you to be introspective about the changing seasons.
Number Ten: “The First Days of Spring” by Noah and the Whale.
“The First Days of Spring” is a song by Noah and the Whale, off of their 2009 album of the same name. The first verse goes, “it’s the first day of spring / and my life is starting over again / well the trees grow, the river flows / and its water will wash away my sin / for I do believe that everyone / has once chance to f*** up their lives / like a cut down tree, I will rise again / I’ll be bigger and stronger than ever before.” The second verse goes, “there’s hope in every new seed / and every flower that grows on the Earth / and though I love you, and you know that / well I no longer know what that’s worth / and I’ll come back to you, in a year or so / and rebuild ready to become / oh the person you believed in / or the person that you used to love.” This song has semi-optimistic lyrics with a heart-breaking melody. This is a classic, upbeat track that reminisces about lost love. One of the verses goes, “I can remember the first time we ever met / The sun was shining, love was gleaming in the air / You caught my eye and the next thing that I knew / I was in love, I was so in love with you,” followed by, “We were so close for a season of my life / I wanted so much to have you for my wife / But something changed the season came to an end / I had to leave you and that's where my heartache began.” The chorus goes, “spring love, come back to me / I need you and I want you
In the first stanza, first line; I saw two trees embracing, this means that there is a couple that is in love. In the second and third line we see that the male is weaker “one leaned on the other, as if to throw her down” and in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh line we notice that the female has the strength, willpower and is dominating. In the second stanza, line one, two and three we see that the female being dominant makes the male feel broken and intimidated. In line four “the most wind-warped, you could see”, hear we see that there is a major problem between the two.
In Nevil Shute’s On the Beach, the story of the last days of the lives of the last humans on Earth is told. Victims of Global-Thermonuclear war, which they took no part in, they are aware of the massive radiation cloud drifting south towards Australia. The main focus of the novel is not the plot, but the characters, who they become and what they do in their last days. Two such characters are John Osborne, a scientist studying the effects of the radiation, and Mary Holmes, a Navy-wife and recent mother. Through the course of the novel, though there is little interaction between the two, it becomes apparent that they are foils for each other, portraying near opposite reactions to the impending end.
Each author has their own writing style they have developed over the years, which includes the uses of different tools to enhance one’s thoughts. The modes of rhetoric include a total of nine unique writing tools, which essayist tend to lean on throughout their work. The point of writing for many people is not about crafting a unique writing style, but to point an audience towards a meaningful theme of some sort. Even if two pieces of writing do not share the same concept or subject, they have the ability to share modes of rhetoric. In the essays “Once More to the Lake” by E.B. White and “Shooting An Elephant” by George Orwell, each author focuses extensively on description, comparison and contrast, and exemplification. By using these few
John Karkauer novel, Into the Wild displays a true life story about a young man by the name of Christopher McCandless, who creates a new life for himself by leaving civilization to live in the wilderness. The story displays how Christopher develops and matures throughout the story by prevailing harsh predicaments and learning valuable lessons on the way. Christopher’s character evolves by comprehending several new lessons and such as finding true pleasure, disregarding other people’s judgments, as well as realizing that material things are just material things and nothing else. All through the story, Christopher struggles to discover the true satisfaction in his life. Christopher struggles to choose what makes him truthfully content over what makes his parents glad. Christopher’s parents want him to attend law school, despite the fact that he wants to follow his passion to live in the northern wild. Christopher’s letter to his sister Carine says, “or that they think I’d actually let them pay for my law school if I was going to go….” (Krakauer.pg21). According to this quote it can be known that Christopher does not really feel any pleasure or happiness in wanting to go to law school. He finds his satisfaction with life on the road and experiences this because life on the road gives him endless possibilities and adventures every day. Christopher’s letter to Ron Franz goes as, “I’d like to repeat the advice I gave you before, in that I think you really should make a radical change in your lifestyle and begin in boldly do things which you may previously never have thought of doing, or been too hesitant to attempt……Don’t settle down and sit in one place. Move around, be nomadic, make each day a new horizon.”(Krakaur.pg56-57). The letter details the benefits of living a life in the wild such as the new adventures you face every day. Chris feels what actually happiness is, when he meets face to face with the wild. As he experiences the northern wild, he learns that true happiness doesn’t come from one source, but from various foundations in a person’s life. Chris penned a brief note, which says, “I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD. GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!”(Krakauer.pg199) The brief note shows that even though Chris was on the edge of death, he was finally happy with his life.
Justin Torres Novel We the Animals is a story about three brothers who lived a harassed childhood life. There parents are both young and have no permanent jobs to support their family. The narrator and his brothers are delinquents who are mostly outside, causing trouble, causing and getting involved in a lot of problems and barely attending school, which their parents allowed them to do. The narrator and his brothers were physically abused by their father, leading them to become more violent to one another and others, drinking alcohol and dropping out of school. Physical abuse is an abuse involving one person’s intention to cause feelings of pain, injury and other physical suffering and bodily harm to the victim. Children are more sensitive to physical abuse, they show symptoms of physical abuse in short run and more effects in the long run. Children who sustain physical abuse grow up with severely damaged of sense of self and inability. The narrator and his brothers were physically abused by their father and showed long run symptoms of Antisocial behaviors, drinking problems and most importantly they becoming more violent themselves. Many psychological and sociological studies such as “Childhood history of abuse and child abuse potential: role of parent’s gender and timing of childhood abuse” and “school factors as moderators of the relationship between physical child abuse and pathways of antisocial behavior can be used to prove the argument that children who sustain physical abuse grow up with criminal and antisocial behaviors.
"The man I love" sung by Sarah Vaughan, and "Someone to watch over me" sung by Blossom Dearie, are both typical love songs. I enjoyed the second one more then the first love song, because it is more soulful, only with a piano in the background and great vocal performance by Blossom Dearie.
Being a generally required read, most everyone has heard of The Odyssey by Homer, meanwhile, very few have recognized the connection between it and its partner movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? by the Coen brothers. Being purposely made to portray the large epic, O Brother, Where Art Thou is full of juicy details that one would not truly understand unless they had read the epic. Throughout the movie one can find the original basics that Homer incorporated into The Odyssey with ease. The similarities between the two are quite transparent as well. The movie successfully demonstrates the hospitality found in Greece and portrayed by Homer, the mutual devotion between the company of men being led and Ulysses and Odysseus, and the primary journey found in The Odyssey.
The fundamental characteristic of magical realism is its duality, which enables the reader to experience both the character’s past and the present. In the novel, Monkey Beach, Eden Robinson uses this literary device to address the the trauma and mistreatment of the Haisla community in Canada by unveiling the intimate memories of the protagonist, Lisamarie, and the resulting consequences of this oppression. Monkey Beach illustrates how abuse in the past leads to another form of self-medication in the future - a neverending, vicious cycle for the members of the Haisla community. Many characters in Monkey Beach are scarred from childhood sexual abuse and family neglect, and resort to drug and alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism. These appalling memories are an account of the impact of colonization on the Haisla territory which continues to haunt the Aboriginal community throughout generations.

How I came to see that love returns to where it originated was through the thick body of details to where to poem really spoke.
Although, I wished that the poem included more about the resurrection. It was good that it discussed Jesus return and the Day of Judgment, to encourage man’s repentance and salvation in Christ. I wondered if this poet who must have lived sometime in the Early Middle Ages actually had a dream where he imagined a tree speaking to him about the death and resurrection of Christ and then he wrote it down. If that was the case, then I can understand why the poem is not perfectly accurate and somewhat jumbled, when compared to scripture. Often our thoughts are jumbled, when we dream. The order of events seems to be a little offset. For example, the earth did not tremble, until after Jesus spirit left Him. The poem appears to put the trembling ahead of Jesus death. However, there is a lot of the good, the true, and the beautiful in this poem. It celebrates the sacrifice that Jesus made on the cross and it encourages us to look to Him on the cross, so we don’t forget how much He loves us. Also, it encourages us in our faith and knowing that Jesus will return someday, to take us into eternal glory with Him. It was good that the poem concluded with the Dreamer feeling enthusiastic about the cross, looking forward to eternal glory, and desiring to share the good news with others. This is the way that
