The European Union is a supranational government body that is, by definition, changing the traditional role of the nation state and sovereignty in Europe. This Union was formed voluntarily by states with similar goals and is unique in its conception and design to the European continent. Although The EU (European Union) is strengthening Europe economically and politically the states that form it have surrendered considerable amounts of their national sovereignty.
The meaning of sovereignty has evolved over time; however, today there are several clear characteristics that define the concept of sovereignty in relation to the nation state. A sovereign state is defined by its autonomy and independence from foreign powers. Sovereign states have well defined borders and have the power to control, in principal, the amount of goods and people that enter and exit it’s territory. The citizens of such a state have the ability to choose a form of government without foreign interference. A sovereign state and its government are also able to set and conduct domestic and economic policy free from external intervention. These qualities are the main factors that define a sovereign state and its capabilities.

While with Calypso Odysseus relies upon the gods to decide whether he shall return home or if he is fated to stay with the nymph goddess. Though Odysseus is powerful amongst mortal men his attempts to free himself from Calypso’s island prove to be in vain. Instead, Odysseus must wait, for "…in the gods’ lap it lies to say if he shall come and wreak revenge in his halls…" (6). Odysseus must bow to the gods’ wishes and it is Athena, rather then Odysseus himself, who convinces mighty Zeus to free Odysseus and set him upon his journey home. Athena pleads Odysseus’ cause to the gods upon Olympus and beseeches her father begging that "…if it now please the blessed gods that wise Odysseus shall return to his own home…" (2) then she will aid him in this journey. Were it not for Athena’s intervention, Odysseus might never have returned to his native land and seen his dear Ithica once more.
Working unitedly is a basic thing to do if you have one to 10 people, but with almost a whole country working as a union is a significant and a spontaneous deal. Which Union am I talking about? Fast forwarding in the epic to the time when Odysseus meets Circe on her island, he was given advice by the god Hermes to take a special potion called Moly to prevent Circe’s magic from affecting him. When she was unable to bewitch him under her magic, he jumped her and threatened to kill her with his blade. Circe instantly submits to Odysseus and offers him sex along with advice for his voyage. The translation of the Quapaw name means “downstream people”. The tribe got the name after splitting from the Dehgiha tribe and moving down the Mississippi river. There were two tribal divisions within the tribe. The two divisions were named Han-ka or the Earth People and the ti-zho or the Shy People. The total number of clans with in the Quapaw tribe is 21, some of the tribal clan names include; Elk, Eagle, Small Bird, Turtle, and Fish. Odysseus’ relations with Circe shows both Odysseus’ loyalty and infidelity. When Odysseus reaches the island of Circe, he tells his shipmates to scout the island and meet Circe. In return Circe turns Odysseus’ scouts into swine. To save them, Odysseus must go to Circe. There, he must threaten and seduce her in order for the pigs to be turned back into men. When Odysseus is exploring the island alone, notices that there is a house on a hill. Odysseus divides his men in half, and it is Eurylochus’ group that goes to the house. All of Eurylochus’ company except Eurylochus himself enters the house, where they are given food and wine by Circe. The meal, however, is drugged, and the sailors are turned into pigs. Eurylochus hurries back to the ship, telling Odysseus that the other men have disappeared.
In recounting the prophecy to the Phaecians, Odysseus reveals through his emphasis on her separating him from his shipmates that she intended for him alone to hear her advice: “But Circe, taking me by the hand, drew me away / from all my shipmates there and sat me down” (Homer 12.36-7). The enjambment in line 36 leaves unanswered the question of from what Circe drew Odysseus away, which creates anticipatory tension that stresses the following line in which Odysseus reveals that she separated him from his crew. By highlighting Odysseus’ separation from his crew just before he receives Circe’s prophecy not to arm himself to fight Scylla, the text underscores that Odysseus alone is responsible for accepting and executing this prophecy. The men exploring find the stone house that belongs to Circe and all of them go in but one. The men drink her magical drink and they all turn into many different animals. The man waiting outside see what happens to them and runs back to the ship to tell Odysseus. He brings bag one of the men back to prove to Odysseus that he is not lying. Odysseus decides to go and try to save the rest of his men. Odysseus is forced to climb up a mountain to get to the top. On his way up Hermes visits him and gives him a magical plant that protects Odysseus from Circes magical drink. Odysseus arrives and drinks Circes drink and doesn’t turn into an animal. Odysseus asks Circe to turn his men back to men. She tells Odysseus that she will turn them back once he takes her to bed. Odysseus agrees and his men are turned back into men. The European Union (EU), since the initial foundation in 1952 as the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and throughout periods of development, has been considered one of the most advanced forms of regional integration. It, based on numerous treaties and resolutions, has strived to promote values such as peace, cooperation or democracy, and in 2012 was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for having “contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe” (Nobel Media AB, 2012). Despite its struggle for promoting democracy, the EU itself has long experienced scholarly criticisms that it suffers the democratic deficit, from which its democratic legitimacy is undermined by observable problems in political accountability and participation. As the importance of legitimacy in a democratically representative institution is hardly debatable, the criticism of whether and why the EU lacks democracy has been given a considerable gravity in academia.

The belief of a nation running their own state is a right for most of us. However, this is only a new conviction. The right for one to sovereign their own nation has come due with hard work. Illicit imperialism has stricken humanity for numerous years. Due to the aspiration of power certain nations today do not self-govern their own state. But why would there be a desire for this power? Some of the main items include natural resources, increased assets, and military expansion. Ideally this is great if this is voluntary external rule, but when it’s no longer voluntary this is when the boundary has been crossed. This is why every nation should have control over their own state if they desire.
The enlargement of the European Union (EU) in 2004 and 2007 has been termed as the largest single expansion of the EU with a total of 12 new member states – bringing the number of members to 27 – and more than 77 million citizens joining the Commission (Murphy 2006, Neueder 2003, Ross 2011). A majority of the new member states in this enlargement are from the eastern part of the continent and were countries that had just emerged from communist economies (EC 2009, Ross 2011), although overall, the enlargement also saw new member states from very different economic, social and political compared to that of the old member states (EC 2009, Ross 2011). This enlargement was also a historical significance in European history, for it saw the reunification of Europe since the Cold War in a world of increasing globalization (EC 2009, Mulle et al. 2013, Ross 2011). For that, overall, this enlargement is considered by many to have been a great success for the EU and its citizens but it is not without its problems and challenges (EC 2009, Mulle et al. 2013, Ross 2011). This essay will thus examine the impact of the 2004/2007 enlargements from two perspectives: firstly, the impact of the enlargements on the EU as a whole, and thereafter, how the enlargements have affected the new member states that were acceded during the 2004/2007 periods. Included in the essay will be the extent of their integration into the EU and how being a part of the Commission has contributed to their development as nation states.
