The RMS Titanic, a luxury steamship that was most commonly known as the “unsinkable ship” in the 1900’s, sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912 and led to the death of over 1,500 people in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic ocean, just off the Newfoundland coast. The Royal Mail Steamer Titanic began construction in March of 1909. The building transpired in the Harland and Wolff shipyard, located in Belfast, Ireland. During this time period, Captain Edward Smith made the infamous quote, “I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that.” Many people believed those words at the time. Misinformation spread like wildfire due to the lack of communication during that century. Many newspapers reported that the Titanic hadn’t even sank and it was being towed back to a port. Aboard the Cunard’s Carpathia was a veteran journalist named Carlos F. Hurd. Many reporters were swarming the port where the Carpathia was to dock, but Hurd was allowed to speak with many survivors and compose an article before anyone else could. The article was published in the New York Evening World on April 18th. Songs, movies, poems, and books were released in the following months. In the month of May, a survivor, Dorothy Gibson, who was a famous silent film actress in that generation, had reconstructed her memories and experiences into a movie with the help of her director boyfriend. The movie was named, Saved from the Titanic. The next month, two famous poems about the ship were released. “The Chief Incidents of the Titanic Wreck” by Edwin Drew and “The Convergence of the Twain” by Thomas Hardy. Edwin Drew pays tribute to the victims of the sinking and Thomas Hardy talks about the ship and it confronting the iceberg unknowingly. The director asked for survivors of the ship to attend the premiere of the film. Many showed up and talked together, bringing up memories and honouring those who weren’t as lucky as themselves. A couple of years later, the largely famous book, A Night to Remember by Walter Lord was published, giving the the whole story of the sinking, the passengers, and the ship. Lastly, one of the most famous movies about the Titanic was, also, named Titanic. This movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio. The directors focused on two fictional characters Jack and Rose.
