There has been a time in the past when young adults were forced to accomplish public service. During the period of World War II for example, men were enrolled by force into the military. Then in the later years, this enrollment was made voluntary. Some people are still nostalgic to the period when young adults were mandatorily put in the military and want young adults to work for a year in public service not only in the military but all fields of government. On one hand, I believe that public service is beneficial, on the other hand I wonder about the timing and the duration in addition to raising the question of people’s legal rights.

Everyone knows that education is correctly assimilated when it is continuous. A break in education may have negative consequences on students’ education. Already, people who go to school and work at the same time have hard time following a normal curriculum in school. Also, putting the public service after college is going to be seen as a lack of opportunity for students. Just after college is the period when students are fresh of their knowledge acquired from their education and ready to conquer the job market. This delay in working will also impacts their ability to quickly repay their loans. In a society where credit score affects all people’s financial activities, it is important to have a very good credit score; this means, not damaged by a high student loan. I strongly believe that one year of the public service can positively be shorten to some months of public services. In fact, it takes three or four months for a regular trainee who does an internship in a company to know how the company works. Another important issue concern the people’s legal rights. It brings to whether people should decide their own future or be dictated by the government. Among these advantages, we can list professional skills, work ethic, knowledge of government and love of one’s country. If school gives knowledge, it is in the working place that this knowledge is shown. Being a good worker is not only showing professional skills, it is also being on time at work, getting along with co-workers, giving respect to the supervisor, all this will be learned by young adults. Public service will also open young adults’ eyes to the making of the laws in their communities. Not the least, working in the military for example will make young adults have a love of their country. On the negative side of doing public service, there is the discontinuation of education, loss of opportunity, and most importantly the involvement of government in people’s civil rights. Other aspects that also will certainly financially diminish young people will be their inability to perform their profession just after finishing their studies; as a consequence, it will have an impact on the reimbursement of their student loans . These two financial effects are understood in the situation when public service work is required after the completion of young adults’ studies.
