The Beloved Tom Sawyer
A hero needs to be selfless because other people are relying on them to be helpful and caring and they can not do that if they are just thinking about themselves. Tom Sawyer, the protagonist in Mark Twain novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, discovers that true heroism is achieved through self-sacrifice and through facing fears and overcoming them through actions. In the beginning, Tom tries to be a hero but fails. However, Tom is a hero when he saves Muff Potter from a certain death. Furthur, Tom acts heroically when he saves Becky from punishment at school. Many times throughout the novel Tom tries to be a hero but falls short.

On the last day of muff trial, Tom takes the stand and tells the truth. Tom new it happened that night and he felt as though it was more important for muck to be saved rather than his safety. This is brave of him because he knows his life was at risk. Tom tells the truth to the courtroom. Twain writes, “Tom began-hesitatingly at first but as he warmed to his subject his words flowed more and more easily; in a little while every sound ceased but his own voice; every eye fixed itself upon him; with parted lips and bated breath the audience hung upon his words, taking no note of time, rapt in the ghastly fascinations of the tale”(123). This was also a very selfless thing for Tom to do. He risks his own life for muff even though it was in front of engine Joe which was a very big risk. He also broke the oath with Huckleberry Finn which is not something you will see Tom do very often. It is clear to see that there are times when Tom does do the right
