Why Students Should Have Access to Textbooks at Home Textbooks, there was a time when you would see school aged children lugging them home after school. Sometimes a polite young man would offer to carry a young lady’s books as a way to open up a channel of communication. Unfortunately, today textbooks are almost a memory of the past and as this daunting task of carrying books home becomes less and less, so does valuable educational needs. The public school system is failing our children and there is a need to create a system that allows children access to textbooks and other academic materials. “A text-book is any manual of instruction, a book containing a presentation of the principles of the subject used as a basis of instruction.” (Webster 's Dictionary). With the internet as a tool, there is a plethora of accessible information. However, most classrooms are still teaching children with textbooks. These textbooks are used in the classroom, but not accessible at home where the child needs them. Children utilize textbooks as an accessible go-to guide and reference to assist in reinforcing the teachings done in the classroom. Textbooks are needed to prepare the student and revisit the subject matter discussed in class. Even the most attentive child will miss something during a lecture, so being able to self-teach through the use of a textbook is essential. If children are not given access to their textbooks to use as a reference, how will they know how to utilize reference materials once they approach higher education? Textbooks are considered “An easy-to-use “second voice” in the course, available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in a random-access format that allows students to move at their own pace, regardless of their education backgrounds” (Lichtenberg). With new subject matter like Core math, parents are finding it difficult to assist their children with their homework and other studies. Core math was not introduced until 2010; therefore, not only is it new to the students, it is unfamiliar to the parents as well. However, Core math is only one example of the subjects that today’s children are having a difficult time understanding.
Students who fail in math and English are more likely to drop out of school by the eighth grade; they feel as though they are not intelligent enough when the truth is, they were not given a fair chance. Today’s economy is requiring more for survival and yet the students are not being properly prepared. Economic changes have played a role in the cost of education.
