Along with the training, the faculty has to consider if a class can be converted and taught online, and how to make that change. Some classes are easier than others to convert while some are virtually impossible to convert to an online format. SCC has a very successful nursing program, so successful in fact that a new building is currently under construction that will be dedicated solely for nursing classes. While a few of these courses could be taught online, the vast majority of them require face to face and hands on training. Students can have issues with adapting to online classes as well. With traditional face to face courses, course sections are defined based not only on instructional availability but also student schedule necessity. As students and faculty cannot be in two classes at once many sections of the same class must be offered to accommodate the many scheduling conflicts, even though class sizes may be small. With online courses, primarily due to their flexible time schedules, class sections can be made based only on enrollment numbers and faculty class load. This consolidation can allow institutions to keep costs low, and possibly offer a more diverse catalog of courses. Hybrid courses are an added benefit of colleges going online. Usually, the same tools that are used to teach online classes can be used to enhance the face to face courses as well. These hybrid courses can allow students to meet in class fewer times per week, have more ways to access materials, and stay connected to other students and faculty even when off-site. Recorded video lectures are one aspect of online classes that give them an almost face to face feel. I can see the instructor, watch their presentations and learn from the value added content that they provide in class. The way in which online classes are organized can also be a huge plus for me. I can see what will be coming up and allow me to set my schedule accordingly. By far my favorite aspect has been the open time frame that some professors provide. I prefer to work ahead, so if I have to work overtime with little notice I am not behind in my class work. While some of my professors haven’t allowed this, the majority have when I asked. There are a few things I would like to see added. Optional chat sessions with instructors for difficult classes would be fantastic. Having a near real-time dialog would be more beneficial than the current discussion board model, where an answer may not come for hours or days. Course syllabus postings on the scheduling website, so I can see what a class will entail prior to signing up for it. Finally, a little more reliability of when a given course is offered. Sometimes when a particular course is needed, it can be frustrating to not have it offered for multiple
