Tanning Informative Speech

Attention Gaining Device: According to the American Academy of Dermatology, “Thirty-five percent of American adults, 59 percent of college students, and 17 percent of teens have reported using a tanning bed in their lifetime.”

Relevance: There is no such thing as a tan that is healthy and safe.

Credibility: The World Health Organization says that “A suntan may be cosmetically desirable, but in fact it is nothing but a sign that your skin has been damaged and has attempted to protect itself.”

Preview: First, we will examine why tanning is so unhealthy for our skin. Next, I will share what harmful things tanning can do to your body. Lastly, we will discuss whether it is safer to tan in the natural sunlight or tan in a tanning bed.

Transition: Although we all love tanning and the dark golden skin, tanning is bad news.

Body:

I. Tans are caused by damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun

UV rays can lead to skin aging, like wrinkles and age spots, as well as skin cancer.

B. If you start tanning as a teen, you are at a higher risk of getting skin cancer. Every time you tan, you are increasing your risk of getting skin cancer.

II. According to The American Academy of Dermatology A recent investigation estimated that 3,234 injuries related to indoor tanning — including burns, loss of consciousness and eye injuries — were treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments every year from 2003 to 2012

A. Not only can tanning give you the risk of having skin cancer, but it involves eye problems, aging, and can affect the immune system, making the body vulnerable to disease

B. Eye protection is very important when tanning. Closing your eyes is not enough to shield off the UV rays. UV rays can damage your eyes, including photokeratits, which is a sunburn to your cornea, and can cause cancer around the
